Haitian driver's license translation to English for a DMV counter in Florida, New York or Massachusetts, a car insurer that prices your policy on how long you have been licensed, a rental desk, or an employer hiring drivers. The Haitian permis de conduire is a French card, and we translate the front, the back and the category codes.

What is on a permis de conduire and what a DMV does with it
Most states will not swap a Haitian license for their own, so the translation usually proves you held one, not that you can skip the test.
The card and the office behind it
The permis comes out of the Service de la Circulation des Véhicules, and the traffic police, the Direction de la Circulation et de la Police Routière (DCPR) of the Police Nationale d'Haïti, check it on the road. Newer cards state that the card is the property of the state, carry the director's signature and print an identifier built from the holder's NIF, the tax number, plus a record number. The translation keeps that number exactly as printed and says in a note what it is made of, because a US clerk will otherwise read the NIF as the license number.
Categories under the 2006 Code de la route
Haiti's license types are set by decree, and the card shows them as letters, Type A for motorcycles up to the heavy categories. A letter alone means nothing to a DMV examiner or an insurer. We keep the letter and add the vehicle class the decree assigns to it in brackets, so a Type B holder is read as licensed for a private car and a Type C or E holder as licensed for the heavier vehicles the card actually covers.
Why the DMV and the insurer want it
Florida, where most Haitian licenses end up, does not exchange them, and a new resident takes the written and road tests. The translation still earns its place: some DMVs count a foreign license toward the learner's permit period or let you book the road test at once, and every one of them wants a certified translation of a card that is not in English. Insurers ask for the date de délivrance to count your years of driving, which can lower a premium, and a rental desk uses the translation to match the card to your passport.
Who is asking for your Haitian Creole driver's license translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
State DMVs
Most DMV offices accept a certified translation of a foreign license. A few want it notarized as well, so check with your office before you order.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Haitian Creole driver's license.
01
Scan both sides
The categories, restrictions and the issue and expiry dates are usually on the back. Upload the front and the back in one order so the translation covers the whole card.
02
Match the name to your passport
Tell us the English spelling you use. The translation shows the name as the license prints it and notes your spelling so the office can match both.
03
Ask the office which format they accept
Some DMVs want a certified translation, others want it notarized as well. Check before you order and add notarization at checkout if they ask for it.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Haitian Creole driver's license translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the driver's license is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Can I trade my Haitian license for a Florida or New York license with a translation?
Not directly. Neither state has an exchange agreement with Haiti, so you take the tests. What the translation does is let the clerk accept the permis as proof of prior licensing and identity, and let your insurer count the years on it. Bring the original card, the translation and your passport or TPS approval to the counter together.
My permis expired while I was in the US. Is it still worth translating?
Yes, if an insurer or employer asks for driving history. The card shows when you were first licensed and which categories you held, and an expired card proves that as well as a valid one. A rental company or a DMV will not accept an expired license as a current one, so for driving you need a US license, but for the history the translation is enough.
Can I drive in Florida on my Haitian permis while I wait for a US license?
As a visitor, usually yes, carrying the permis with your passport, and an officer who stops you may want an English translation. Once you live in Florida, the state gives you 30 days to get a Florida license, and the permis no longer covers you. Other states set their own deadlines, so check with the DMV where you live.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
