Ukrainian driver's license translation for a DMV, a car insurer, an employer that hires drivers or a rental desk. We translate the посвідчення водія issued by the МВС service centres, the earlier laminated cards from the ДАІ, and the Soviet водительское удостоверение some drivers still carry, into certified English.
The current card follows the Vienna Convention layout and already prints a Latin spelling of the name. What a US reader cannot work out is the category table, the dates and the issuing codes.
Numbered fields and the issuing code
Fields are numbered the way the 1968 Vienna Convention sets out: 1 and 2 the surname and given names in Cyrillic with a transliteration beneath, 3 the date and place of birth, 4a and 4b the issue and expiry dates, 4c the issuing authority written as a code such as ТСЦ 8041, 5 the license number and 9 the categories held. The translation spells out that 4c is a territorial service centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and names the region the code belongs to, so an insurer sees a licensing office rather than a bare number.
Categories and the dates beside them
The back lists categories A1, A, B1, B, C1, C, D1, D, BE, C1E, CE, D1E, DE and T, each with a from date and a to date, and the date category B was first obtained is what a US insurer uses to price a driver's experience. Older cards show only the letters held, without dates, and a driver with one of those can get a register extract through the Електронний кабінет водія that gives the original date. We translate the card as it is, and the extract as a second page if you add it.
First license for two years, then thirty
A first license is issued for two years and exchanged for one valid thirty years; earlier ones ran fifty years or had no expiry at all, so an expiry decades away is normal and not a misprint. The ДАІ-era laminated card of the 1990s and 2000s is printed in Ukrainian and Russian, and the Soviet booklet is in Russian with a талон for penalty marks. We translate each as printed and name the issuing body as it was called at the time.
Who is asking for your Ukrainian driver's license translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
State DMVs
Most DMV offices accept a certified translation of a foreign license. A few want it notarized as well, so check with your office before you order.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Ukrainian driver's license.
01
Scan both sides
The categories, restrictions and the issue and expiry dates are usually on the back. Upload the front and the back in one order so the translation covers the whole card.
02
Match the name to your passport
Tell us the English spelling you use. The translation shows the name as the license prints it and notes your spelling so the office can match both.
03
Ask the office which format they accept
Some DMVs want a certified translation, others want it notarized as well. Check before you order and add notarization at checkout if they ask for it.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Ukrainian driver's license translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the driver's license is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Will a DMV let me exchange my Ukrainian license for a state license?
That is each state's rule, and few states exchange a Ukrainian license without a test, so the translation is used to show driving experience, skip a learner's period where a state allows it, or get an insurance rate as an experienced driver rather than a new one. Ask your DMV what it wants before ordering, including whether the translation should be notarized, which is an add-on at checkout.
I only have my license in Diia. Can you translate that?
Yes. The Diia app shows the license with the same fields and a QR code, and a PDF or screenshot from it can be translated. We state on the translation that the source is a digital copy from Diia and note the QR code. Some DMVs and insurers want the plastic card; if yours does, a replacement can be ordered through the Електронний кабінет водія and delivered by post.
Can you translate a US driver's license into Ukrainian?
Yes. A US license is translated into Ukrainian for a service centre that exchanges a foreign license, for a car purchase, or for an insurer in Ukraine, and the service centre wants the translation notarized. We translate the front and back, with the state's class codes written out and the restrictions explained, and add notarization at checkout if the office asks for it.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
