Haitian Birth Certificate Translation

Haitian birth certificate translation to English for an I-130, TPS, a green card interview, a US passport for a child born in Haiti, or a school that needs proof of age. The record is the acte de naissance written by the officier de l'état civil or the extrait des registres des actes de naissance from the Archives Nationales. Both are French documents, and we translate every line, stamp and marginal note.

What a Haitian birth record says, line by line

A Haitian acte de naissance is a short narrative, not a form with boxes, and the officer reading the English needs the same facts in the same order.

Who declared the birth, and the word naturel

The acte names the person who came to the bureau de l'état civil to declare the child, usually the father or the mother, with two witnesses and their professions. When an unmarried mother declares the birth alone, the father is not named, the child carries her surname and the entry is marked naturel or naturelle. That word has no clean English equivalent. We translate it as born out of wedlock with the French kept in brackets, so the USCIS officer comparing the acte to the parent named on the I-130 understands why one parent is missing rather than suspecting a different child.

Two dates on the extrait

The extrait from the Archives Nationales prints the date of birth and, separately, the date the birth was declared. For many Haitians, especially from rural communes, the two are years apart. A consular officer reads a wide gap as a reason to look closer, so the translation writes both dates out in words and labels each one. It never drops the declaration date to make the record look tidier, and if a jugement from the tribunal civil ordered the registration, that ruling is translated on the same order.

Names and places as the officier spelled them

Haitian given names often come in pairs, such as Marie Carmelle or Jean Robert, and both belong in the first-name field. The acte gives the place of birth as a commune and a section communale, often with the name of the habitation, and US forms have no box for a section communale. The translation keeps every spelling as written, including the French spelling of a town the family calls by its Creole name, and adds a short translator's note explaining what a section communale is the first time it appears.

Who is asking for your Haitian Creole birth certificate translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

US passports and the Department of State

The Department of State wants the translation notarized. Add notarization at checkout and we handle the rest.

Consulates abroad

Consulates receive the translation of a US document, often with an apostille on the original. Tell us the consulate in your order notes.

Apostille service

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Haitian Creole birth certificate.

01

Scan the whole page

Include the back, the margins and any marginal notes. A later correction or a recognition of paternity is often written in the margin, and the recipient needs to see it translated.

02

Give us the English spelling of each name

If your passport or green card spells a name without an accent, tell us at checkout. The translation keeps the names as the certificate writes them and notes the spelling you use.

03

Order the format the recipient asked for

If they want the long form, send the long form. We translate what you upload and cannot add parents' details that a short-form extract leaves out.

USCIS asked for the extrait des archives but I only have the acte from the officier. Can you translate that for now?
Yes. The State Department lists the extrait from the Archives Nationales as the document a consulate wants, and USCIS officers usually follow it, but a translated acte lets you file on time while a relative in Haiti requests the extrait. When the extrait arrives, send it and we translate it as a separate one-page document at $25, with its own certification.
My father recognized me years after my birth. Which paper shows that?
An acte de reconnaissance, drawn up before an officier de l'état civil or a notaire, records that a father acknowledged a child after the birth was registered, and the birth entry then carries a mention in the margin. For a petition by a father, USCIS reads both. We translate the acte de reconnaissance and the marginal note on the extrait, so the two are filed together.
Can you translate a US birth certificate into French for the Haitian consulate?
Yes. Parents who want a US-born child registered as Haitian, or who apply for the child's Haitian passport at the consulate in Miami, New York or Boston, are asked for the US birth certificate with a French translation. We translate the long-form certificate, including the state seal and the registrar's attestation, and can notarize the translation if the consulate asks for that.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
