Haitian marriage certificate translation to English for a spouse petition, TPS, family reunification parole or a consular visa, from the acte de mariage drawn up by an officier de l'état civil and the extrait des archives issued by the Archives Nationales. Haitian civil records are written in French, and our Haitian translators read the handwritten ones.
Written for Haitian Creole marriage certificate records
Acte de mariage or extrait des archives?
Both prove the same marriage, and a consular officer may ask for one or the other.
The acte, written in French
Haitian civil status has used French since the state was founded, so a marriage record is an acte de mariage in French, not Creole, even where the couple speak only Creole. The officier de l'état civil writes it as a narrative: the date, usually with the year of Haitian independence beside the calendar year, the spouses with their parents, ages, professions and addresses, the witnesses, and whether a marriage contract was made before a notaire. Older actes are handwritten, and we translate the hand in full.
The extrait des archives
The Archives Nationales d'Haïti keep the registers and issue an extrait des archives for a marriage, on security paper with the director's signature, a stamp and a dry seal. The extrait condenses the acte to its facts and repeats the register reference. Marriages reach the Archives about a year after registration, so a recent marriage may exist only as the officier's expédition. The translation names each document by its own title so the two are not confused.
Civil officer or minister
A Haitian marriage may be celebrated by the officier de l'état civil or by a priest or pastor the state has authorized to act as one, and the religious marriage then counts as the civil one once the minister transmits the act to the registry. A church certificate alone, or a plaçaj, is not a civil marriage record. If your marriage was religious, the proof is still the acte or the extrait, and we translate the church certificate as a supporting document when the checklist asks for it.
Who is asking for your Haitian Creole marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Haitian Creole marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Haitian Creole marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
My acte de mariage is in French. Why is this the Haitian Creole page?
Because the couple, the witnesses and the rest of the file are Haitian, and the translator needs to know Haiti's offices, place names and spellings. The acte is translated from French; the affidavits, church letters and school papers that travel with it are often in Creole. One order can hold both languages, and the price and the certification are the same.
The names on the acte are spelled differently from our passports. What do you do?
The translation keeps the names as the acte spells them and adds the passport spelling in a translator's note the first time each appears, so an officer can match the two. A wife is recorded under her own surname; a Haitian acte does not give her a married name. If a nickname or a shortened name was written into the register, it stays, with the same note.
Do you translate a US marriage certificate into French for Haiti?
Yes. Haitian consulates and the Ministère des Affaires Étrangères ask for a French translation when a marriage abroad is transcribed in Haiti or a spouse applies for Haitian papers. Haiti is not party to the Apostille Convention, so the US certificate is authenticated by the Secretary of State and legalized at the Haitian consulate. Ask the consulate which translation it accepts, and we can notarize ours if they want that.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
