Polish driver's license translation to English for a DMV, a car insurer, an employer or a rental counter, and from English into Polish for a starostwo exchanging a US license. We translate the prawo jazdy in every format Poland has issued: the EU card, the earlier card, and the paper booklet still carried by older drivers.
The card is small and most of its fields are numbered, so a translation lists each number with its meaning rather than guessing at a layout.
The EU card and its categories
Since 19 January 2013 the prawo jazdy follows the EU model: field 4a is the issue date, 4b the expiry, 4c the issuing starosta or prezydent miasta, field 5 the document number, and the table on the back dates each category. Polish categories run AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, C1, C, D1, D, the trailer classes BE, CE and DE, and T, a Polish category for farm tractors that no US class matches. We spell out what each one allows as the card defines it.
Licenses with no expiry date
Cards issued before 19 January 2013 show no expiry for categories A, B and T; they were issued bezterminowo, for life. The law gives those holders a window from 2028 to 2033 to swap them for a dated card, and until then a blank 4b field is normal. A DMV clerk may read the blank as an invalid license, so the translation states that the card was issued without an expiry date under Polish law at the time.
Restriction codes and the driver's address
Field 12 carries EU codes: 01 for glasses or lenses, 78 for automatic transmission only, 95 with a date for professional drivers who hold the certificate of professional competence. Cards issued before 2019 also print the holder's address, and older ones the PESEL number, which newer cards leave off. We translate every code and label the address and the PESEL so an insurer can match the card to the person without a Polish dictionary.
Who is asking for your Polish driver's license translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
State DMVs
Most DMV offices accept a certified translation of a foreign license. A few want it notarized as well, so check with your office before you order.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Polish driver's license.
01
Scan both sides
The categories, restrictions and the issue and expiry dates are usually on the back. Upload the front and the back in one order so the translation covers the whole card.
02
Match the name to your passport
Tell us the English spelling you use. The translation shows the name as the license prints it and notes your spelling so the office can match both.
03
Ask the office which format they accept
Some DMVs want a certified translation, others want it notarized as well. Check before you order and add notarization at checkout if they ask for it.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Polish driver's license translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the driver's license is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Can I exchange a Polish license for a US state license with your translation?
The translation lets the DMV read it; whether the state swaps it, lets you drive on it for a while, or sends you to the test is each state's rule. A few states have signed exchange arrangements with Poland and most have not. The DMV's own list of reciprocal countries settles it, and the same page usually says whether it wants the translation notarized, which you can add at checkout.
My prawo jazdy is the old paper booklet. Can you translate that?
Yes. The booklet, issued until the first card in 1999, has handwritten entries, the issuing office stamp and the categories with their dates on inside pages, and some booklets carry stamps for later extensions. Send a photo of every page with writing on it. A booklet is usually one or two pages at $25 each.
Do you translate a US license into Polish for an exchange in Poland?
Yes. A US license does not follow the Vienna convention, so a starostwo in Poland will exchange it only after a theory exam, and it asks for a translation by a tłumacz przysięgły, which we cannot provide. Where a Polish insurer or employer simply needs to read the license, our Polish translation does the job, and we can notarize it.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
