Polish marriage certificate translation for a spouse petition, a green card interview or a surname change at the Social Security office. The document is the odpis aktu małżeństwa, short or full, issued by any Urząd Stanu Cywilnego in Poland, and we translate it into English line by line, surname fields included. A US marriage certificate bound for a Polish office goes the other way.
What a Polish akt małżeństwa says that a US certificate does not
A Polish marriage act settles names for the next generation, and its fields follow the Kodeks rodzinny i opiekuńczy rather than the layout a US officer is used to.
Three surname lines
The act records, for each spouse, the surname before the wedding and the nazwisko po zawarciu małżeństwa, the surname after it, and then a separate line for the nazwisko dzieci, the surname the children will carry. A Polish bride may keep her name, take her husband's or join the two, and the act shows which. US readers expect a single maiden name, so the translation keeps all three lines and labels each one.
Civil wedding or ślub konkordatowy
Since 1998 a church wedding in Poland can have civil effect. The priest sends the paperwork to the USC within five days and the USC draws up the act, so the odpis looks the same as for a wedding in the registry office, but the date of the ceremony and the date of registration can differ. The place of marriage line names the parish town rather than a town hall. We translate the act as the USC issued it and keep both dates where they appear.
Wzmianki on the odpis zupełny
When a marriage ends, the USC writes a wzmianka dodatkowa on the act: the divorce judgment, its court and the date it became final, a separation, or an annulment. The odpis skrócony folds that into a single line; the odpis zupełny prints the note in full. If you remarried and USCIS wants proof the first marriage ended, the zupełny of the old act does part of that job, and we translate every note under it.
Who is asking for your Polish marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Polish marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Polish marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
I only have the certificate the parish gave us. Is that a marriage certificate?
Not for USCIS. A parish issues its own świadectwo ślubu kościelnego, and if the couple signed the concordat paperwork the USC also drew up a civil act. If they did not, the church wedding has no civil effect in Poland and there is no akt małżeństwa to copy. The USC for the parish town can say whether an act exists; if it does, that odpis is the page to translate, and we can translate the parish certificate beside it as a separate page.
The consulate wants proof that I am single or that my marriage still stands. Is there a Polish document for that?
Yes. Since 2015 a USC issues a zaświadczenie o stanie cywilnym, a one-page certificate that states whether the person is single, married, divorced or widowed as the register has it. It is valid for six months. A fiancé visa or a wedding abroad is the usual reason for ordering one. We translate it into English with the issuing office and the validity date kept visible.
Can you translate a US marriage certificate into Polish?
Yes, for a Polish employer, a bank, a notary handling an estate or a school. One caution: a USC entering a US marriage in the Polish register by transkrypcja asks for the apostilled certificate and a Polish version made by a tłumacz przysięgły or certified by the consul, so for that one purpose ours will not be the copy it files. For every other Polish reader, order here and add notarization if they want it.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
