Haitian Apostille Translation

Haitian apostille translation starts with a correction: Haiti has not joined the Apostille Convention, so no Haitian office issues one. A Haitian document bound abroad carries a chain of légalisation stamps instead, and a US document bound for Haiti needs the same chain the other way. We translate the document and every stamp on it into certified English, and US papers with their certificates into French.

What stands in for an apostille on a Haitian document

The stamps are in French, the document under them is in French, and the translator's job is to make the chain readable to a US clerk who has never seen a Haitian seal.

The légalisation chain inside Haiti

An extrait des archives, a jugement or an acte notarié that will be used outside Haiti goes to the Ministère des Affaires Étrangères in Port-au-Prince for a légalisation stamp, and then to the embassy or consulate of the destination country for its own. A notarial act usually passes through the Ministère de la Justice or the parquet before the Affaires Étrangères will stamp it. Each stamp carries an office name, a date, a timbre showing the fee paid and a signature over a title such as Chef de Service. We translate the stamps as a numbered list after the document, in the order they were applied, so the reader can follow who certified what.

USCIS does not ask for any of it

USCIS wants a certified English translation of a foreign document and nothing more. The I-130, I-485, I-589 and TPS instructions say nothing about légalisation, and a Haitian extrait with its translation is filed as it is. The chain comes up elsewhere: a Florida probate court admitting a Haitian death record, a state court asked to recognize a Haitian adoption or divorce, a Canadian province. If a checklist names an apostille from Haiti, tell the office that Haiti issues none and ask what it will take instead. The translation covers whatever stamps end up on the page.

A US document going to Haiti

A US birth certificate, a power of attorney for a land sale in Haiti, a divorce judgment or a company resolution is certified by the Secretary of State of the issuing state, authenticated by the US Department of State, and legalized at the Embassy of Haiti in Washington or a Haitian consulate such as Miami, New York or Boston. The consulate reads French, so the translation is made before the final stamp. We translate the document and the certificates already attached to it, and the consulate's own stamp can be added to the translation afterwards.

Who is asking for your Haitian Creole apostille translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

Registries and courts abroad

A civil registry, a court or a notary in another country reads the apostille as proof the US document is genuine, and wants the whole set translated into its language. Tell us the country in the order notes.

Consulates

Consulates processing a citizenship, marriage or residency application accept a certified translation of the apostilled document. Add notarization at checkout if the checklist asks for it.

Italian comuni and consulates

Italian citizenship applications ask for US vital records with an apostille and an Italian translation of both the record and the apostille page.

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Haitian Creole apostille.

01

Send the apostille with the document it certifies

An apostille is a page stapled or glued to another document. Upload both, since the recipient reads the apostille only as proof that the document under it is genuine.

02

Scan the apostille whole, including the seal

The ten numbered fields, the seal and the signature of the issuing officer are what a foreign registry checks. Keep the full page in frame, including any ribbon or embossed stamp.

03

Get the apostille before you order

The translation has to cover the apostille page too. Have it issued first and then upload the complete set, so nothing is missing from the translation.

I already have a Florida apostille. Can you translate it for Haiti?
We can, but check first that it will do what you need. Florida's Department of State issues an apostille for Hague countries and a different certificate, a certification, for countries like Haiti, and the Haitian consulate expects the certification followed by the US Department of State's authentication. Some posts accept an apostille anyway, since the signature it certifies is the same. Ask the consulate, and we translate whichever certificate is on the document into French along with the document itself.
The ministry stamped the back of my extrait. Is that an apostille?
No. It is a légalisation by the Ministère des Affaires Étrangères, certifying the signature of the official who issued the extrait. An apostille does that job in one standard form between Convention countries; a légalisation is Haiti's own stamp and may be followed by a consular one. We translate it like any other stamp, with its date, the signer's title and the fee stamp.
Does the translation itself have to be legalized?
For a US office, no: the signed certification that comes with every translation is what USCIS, a court or a registrar wants. For Haiti, the consulate may ask that the translation be notarized before it legalizes the file, and we offer notarization as an add-on. Some Haitian courts and notaires prefer a translation made in Haiti by a translator they recognize, so ask the receiving office before ordering if the document is headed for a tribunal or a notaire rather than a consulate.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
