German passport translation for a USCIS filing, a Social Security card, a bank or a state agency that wants every page in English. We translate the German, Austrian and Swiss passport, including the official endorsements, the Kinderreisepass and the stamps added at border crossings.
The data page of a German Reisepass already labels its fields in German, English and French, so many US offices read it as it is. The translation matters for the parts printed only in German and for the spelling of the name.
Amtliche Vermerke
Later entries go on a page for official endorsements, the Amtliche Vermerke, written in German only. On an older passport this can be an extension of validity; on any passport it can be a restriction or a note about the holder's name. If your US paperwork shows a name that differs from the data page, this page or the Ordens- oder Künstlername field usually explains why, and we translate both word for word.
Umlauts and the machine-readable line
The printed name keeps ä, ö, ü and ß, but the machine-readable zone at the bottom spells them AE, OE, UE and SS, so Jürgen Weiß becomes WEISS<<JUERGEN. US agencies type names from the MRZ, from the printed line or from a birth certificate, and the mismatch causes rejected forms and mismatched Social Security records. The translation shows both spellings as printed so the officer can match them.
Kinderreisepass, Austrian and Swiss passports
Germany stopped issuing the Kinderreisepass at the start of 2024, but older ones stay valid until they expire, and parents still send them with a child's green card application. Austrian passports follow the same multilingual layout. A Swiss passport shows the Heimatort in place of a place of birth, a field US forms have no box for, so we label it as the place of origin.
Who is asking for your German passport translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A foreign passport used as proof of identity is accepted with a certified translation of the data page. Digital delivery as a PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
A US passport sent abroad for a marriage, a residency permit or a property purchase often needs the translation notarized. Tell us the country in your order notes.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a German passport.
01
Send the data page and any page with a stamp
The photo page carries the name, number and dates. Visa pages, entry stamps and an amendment page matter too when the recipient is tracing travel history, so include them if the checklist asks.
02
Give us the spelling you use in English
The translation keeps the name as the passport prints it and notes the romanized spelling you use elsewhere. Say which at checkout so the recipient can match the two.
03
Scan it flat with the machine-readable lines in frame
The two lines of characters at the foot of the photo page are copied exactly as printed. A crooked or cropped photo hides them and slows the translator down.
Details and pricing
What is included in a German passport translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the passport is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Does USCIS need a translation of my German passport?
Usually not for the data page, since its labels are already in English. USCIS requires a full English translation of any foreign-language document you submit, so translate the endorsement pages and any German stamps you rely on, such as a visa or an entry stamp you use to prove travel dates. A single page is $25.
Can you translate a vorläufiger Reisepass?
Yes. A Passbehörde or a German mission abroad issues the vorläufiger Reisepass, a temporary passport, when a regular one cannot be made in time, and it is valid for a year at most. It has fewer pages, but its German entries and any Amtliche Vermerke are translated the same way as in a regular Reisepass.
My passport shows a doctoral title. How is it translated?
A German doctorate can be entered in a German passport or ID card as DR., though it is not legally part of the name. We keep it as Dr. and add a note that it is an academic degree, so a US agency does not record Dr as a first name or add it to the surname.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
