German marriage certificate translation for a spousal petition, a name change or a green card interview. We translate the Eheurkunde from a German Standesamt, the Austrian Heiratsurkunde and Swiss civil status papers into certified English, and US marriage certificates into German, with a signed certification on every order.
In Germany, Austria and Switzerland only the civil ceremony at the Standesamt creates a marriage, so the civil record is the one USCIS and US courts want. A church certificate from the kirchliche Trauung is a keepsake, not proof.
Ehename and Geburtsname
The Eheurkunde lists each spouse with the name before the marriage and the name after it, and the Ehename the couple chose, if any. A spouse who kept the old name and joined the Ehename to it with a hyphen carries a Begleitname. These fields explain why the name on a German passport differs from the birth certificate, so we translate them line by line and keep the German spellings, umlauts included.
Stammbuch, Familienbuch and Eheregister
Couples married before 2009 often keep a Stammbuch der Familie, the bound folder handed out at the wedding, with the marriage certificate and later the children's certificates filed inside. The Standesamt itself kept a Familienbuch until then. Today the office issues an Eheurkunde, or a beglaubigter Ausdruck aus dem Eheregister that also shows later entries, such as a divorce or a name change. Order from the Standesamt where you married.
Austrian and Swiss papers
Austria issues a Heiratsurkunde from the Standesamt. A Swiss marriage is proved by a marriage certificate or a Familienausweis from the Zivilstandsamt, which lists both spouses, their Heimatorte and any children on one sheet. Registered partnerships have their own papers: the German Lebenspartnerschaftsurkunde from 2001 to 2017 and the Austrian Partnerschaftsurkunde. The translation keeps each title as issued, so a partnership certificate is never presented as a marriage certificate.
Who is asking for your German marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a German marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a German marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
USCIS asks for the civil marriage certificate and a full certified English translation. The Eheurkunde is the civil record, and our signed certification states that the translation is complete and accurate. If either of you was married before, add the divorce decree or death certificate that ended the earlier marriage. Every order carries our 100% USCIS acceptance guarantee.
Do you translate a US marriage certificate into German?
Yes. A German citizen who married in the US can have the marriage entered in the German Eheregister through a Nachbeurkundung, and a US spouse needs the certificate for a residence permit. Many Standesämter take only a translation by a translator sworn by a German court. We are not sworn in Germany, so ask the office before you order.
Is a Heiratsurkunde the same as an Eheurkunde?
Yes. Heiratsurkunde was the German name until 2009 and is still the name in Austria; Eheurkunde is the current German name for the same certificate. Both are the civil record. We translate the title as marriage certificate and keep the German name in brackets so the reader can match it to your other papers.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
