Spanish Passport Translation

Spanish passport translation for USCIS, a passport office, a DMV or a bank, certified and signed. The data page of a modern pasaporte already has English captions, so what usually needs translating is the rest: entry and exit stamps, a Cuban or Venezuelan prórroga, a visa sticker and the observaciones page.

Which pages of a Spanish-language passport need translating

Most Latin American and Spanish passports follow the ICAO layout, with English next to the Spanish on the data page. The pages a US officer cannot read are the ones behind it.

Entry and exit stamps

Stamps from Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Migración, from Migración Colombia or from Spain's Policía Nacional give the date, the port and sometimes a handwritten number of days allowed. For an N-400 or an I-485 those dates prove continuous residence and physical presence, so each stamp is translated as its own entry with the date written in a form a US reader cannot misread. A faint or overlapping stamp is marked partly illegible.

Cuban and Venezuelan prórrogas

A Cuban passport issued before 2023 was valid for a fixed term and extended with prórroga stamps or stickers from a Cuban consulate, each dated and signed. A Cuban Adjustment Act file often includes the passport as proof of nationality, and the prórrogas show the dates it was valid. Venezuela's SAIME issues prórroga stickers that extend an expired passport, and in 2019 DHS said it would treat passports extended that way as valid. We translate every prórroga with its dates, its issuing office and its serial number.

Older passports and the observaciones page

Mexican passports issued before the 2021 electronic booklet, and many older Cuban, Dominican and Central American ones, carry a handwritten issue entry or a typed observaciones page with a name correction, a child's details or a note on dual nationality. A Mexican minor's passport also prints the parents' names and signatures. We translate those pages in full, keep the passport number and the CURP or cédula number exactly as printed, and label each stamp by the page it sits on.

Who is asking for your Spanish passport translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

DMVs, banks and employers

A foreign passport used as proof of identity is accepted with a certified translation of the data page. Digital delivery as a PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.

Consulates and registries abroad

A US passport sent abroad for a marriage, a residency permit or a property purchase often needs the translation notarized. Tell us the country in your order notes.

Notarized translations

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Spanish passport.

01

Send the data page and any page with a stamp

The photo page carries the name, number and dates. Visa pages, entry stamps and an amendment page matter too when the recipient is tracing travel history, so include them if the checklist asks.

02

Give us the spelling you use in English

The translation keeps the name as the passport prints it and notes the romanized spelling you use elsewhere. Say which at checkout so the recipient can match the two.

03

Scan it flat with the machine-readable lines in frame

The two lines of characters at the foot of the photo page are copied exactly as printed. A crooked or cropped photo hides them and slows the translator down.

Request a Quote

Does USCIS need the data page translated if it already has English on it?
Usually not for the data page alone, because the field names are printed in English and the entries are names and numbers. USCIS does want a translation of any page that is in Spanish only, and that is where the stamps, the visas and the observaciones live. If you send the whole passport copy, we translate every page that carries anything in Spanish and skip the blank ones, so you pay only for pages with text.
My passport has expired. Can it still be translated and used?
Yes. An expired passport still proves your name, your nationality and the dates of past entries, and USCIS often wants it for exactly those stamps. We translate it as it is, with the expiry date as printed. Whether the recipient will also take it as current identification is their decision, not the translation's.
Do you translate a US passport into Spanish?
Yes, though the data page rarely needs it, since the US passport book already prints its captions in English, French and Spanish. The passport card is English only, and that is the one a Mexican or Spanish office sometimes asks to see in Spanish. Tell us the office at checkout.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
