Written for French passport records

Most of a French passport is already bilingual. The rest is not.

The printed labels on a modern French data page read Nom/Surname and Prénoms/Given names, so what needs a translator is the material around them.

Observations, nom d'usage and the older passports

The French biometric passport issued since 2006 carries English next to each label, but the free-text fields are French only: the nom d'usage line for a married or double surname, and the page of observations, where the préfecture writes a correction or a note. Passports from before 2006, which people still send as evidence of an old entry date, are entirely in French. We translate every French word and reproduce the bilingual labels once, so the page reads as a complete document.

Stamps and visas tell the travel history

For an N-400 trip list, an I-485 entry date or a continuous residence question, the stamps matter more than the data page. French border stamps show the crossing point and a code; Haitian, Senegalese, Ivorian and Congolese entry stamps are often handwritten with a date in day-month order. A consular visa sticker from a francophone country adds its own fields. Each stamp is listed with its page number, its date written out in English order, and anything unreadable marked illegible rather than guessed.

Haiti, the DRC and the ECOWAS passports

A Haitian passport from the Direction de l'Immigration et de l'Émigration and a Congolese one from the DGM print French first and English second; the ECOWAS biometric passports of Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali and Guinea add Portuguese. Older Haitian passports, and the refugee titre de voyage that France issues instead of a passport, are French only. The translation gives the issuing authority exactly as printed.

Who is asking for your French passport translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

DMVs, banks and employers

A foreign passport used as proof of identity is accepted with a certified translation of the data page. Digital delivery as a PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.

Certified translations

Consulates and registries abroad

A US passport sent abroad for a marriage, a residency permit or a property purchase often needs the translation notarized. Tell us the country in your order notes.

Notarized translations

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a French passport.

01

Send the data page and any page with a stamp

The photo page carries the name, number and dates. Visa pages, entry stamps and an amendment page matter too when the recipient is tracing travel history, so include them if the checklist asks.

02

Give us the spelling you use in English

The translation keeps the name as the passport prints it and notes the romanized spelling you use elsewhere. Say which at checkout so the recipient can match the two.

03

Scan it flat with the machine-readable lines in frame

The two lines of characters at the foot of the photo page are copied exactly as printed. A crooked or cropped photo hides them and slows the translator down.

Do I need my French passport translated if the labels are already in English?
USCIS asks for a certified English translation of any document that contains a foreign language, and a French passport does: the observations, the nom d'usage, the stamps and sometimes the issuing office. Many applicants translate only the data page and the pages with stamps or visas. Count the pages you need and upload those; blank pages do not need to be sent.
My passport is expired or was replaced. Can you still translate it?
Yes. An expired passport is often the only proof of when you first entered the US or of a name you used before a marriage. We translate it as it stands, including the expiry date and any cancelled stamp. If the passport was lost, the déclaration de perte from the police and the consulate's laissez-passer or passeport d'urgence can be translated instead.
Do you translate a US passport into French?
Rarely needed. The US passport prints its labels in English, French and Spanish, so a French mairie, a Québec office or a bank in Senegal can read the data page without help. What does get translated is the US visa and stamp pages, or a US passport card, when a court or a notaire asks for the full travel record. If an office insists, we translate the pages into French and can notarize the translation.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
