Russian passport translation to English for USCIS, a US embassy interview, a bank or an employer, covering the internal паспорт гражданина Российской Федерации that is written only in Russian, and the stamps, visas and notes in a заграничный passport whose data page is already bilingual. We also translate a US passport into Russian for a notary, a bank or a tax office in Russia.
Two Russian passports, and the one USCIS usually wants translated
A Russian citizen holds an internal passport for life inside the country and a separate foreign-travel passport. They carry different numbers, and a US file usually ends up needing pages from both.
Внутренний паспорт: what the data page says
The internal passport is issued at 14 and replaced at 20 and 45. Its photo page carries the series and number, the issuing office written out (ГУ МВД России по г. Москве, or ОУФМС or ОВД on older books), the код подразделения, a six-digit office code, and the date of issue. Place of birth is as recorded at birth, so a person born in 1985 reads гор. Куйбышев, not Samara. We translate the office name in full and keep the code, because USCIS matches it to the number in the same book.
Pages 5 to 19: registration, service, family
The stamped pages are where the information is. Место жительства pages hold the регистрация stamps with each address and date, and a снят с регистрационного учёта stamp when the person moved. Воинская обязанность takes a военнообязанный stamp, семейное положение the marriage and divorce stamps, дети the names and birth dates of children written by hand, and the last pages the series of earlier passports and of the заграничный passport issued. An address history for an I-485, or a marriage date, often comes from these pages alone.
Заграничный паспорт: what is still only in Russian
The data page of the foreign-travel passport prints the name, place of birth and authority in Russian and Latin script, and many US offices accept it without a translation. The rest is not bilingual: the отметки page of a five-year book records children entered into a parent's passport, the issuing authority is an ФМС or МВД unit, and border stamps and visas from the Eurasian countries are in Russian. For a travel history, or a child travelling on a parent's entry, we translate those pages and leave the data page as it reads.
Who is asking for your Russian passport translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A foreign passport used as proof of identity is accepted with a certified translation of the data page. Digital delivery as a PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
A US passport sent abroad for a marriage, a residency permit or a property purchase often needs the translation notarized. Tell us the country in your order notes.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Russian passport.
01
Send the data page and any page with a stamp
The photo page carries the name, number and dates. Visa pages, entry stamps and an amendment page matter too when the recipient is tracing travel history, so include them if the checklist asks.
02
Give us the spelling you use in English
The translation keeps the name as the passport prints it and notes the romanized spelling you use elsewhere. Say which at checkout so the recipient can match the two.
03
Scan it flat with the machine-readable lines in frame
The two lines of characters at the foot of the photo page are copied exactly as printed. A crooked or cropped photo hides them and slows the translator down.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Russian passport translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the passport is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Does USCIS want my internal passport or my foreign passport?
USCIS asks for the passport you travelled on, so the заграничный passport, with the visa and the entry stamp. The internal passport comes in when an officer wants the registration history, the marriage stamp or the children page, or when you are applying from inside the US and the foreign passport has expired. Send the photo page and every page with a stamp or handwriting, and skip the blank ones; each page of up to 250 words is $25.
Do you translate a Soviet passport?
Yes. A red паспорт гражданина СССР, issued until the early 1990s and still held by many older people, has a photo page with a национальность line, a registration section and a page of family stamps, all written by hand. It turns up in pension, inheritance and citizenship-by-birth cases, where a US reader needs to see that the person lived at a certain address or was married in a certain year. We translate the handwriting and the office stamps and note where a field was left blank.
Why does a Russian notary want my US passport translated?
Because every notarial act in Russia, a power of attorney, a property sale, an inheritance, is drawn up from an identity document in Russian. The same applies to opening a bank account, getting an ИНН from the tax office and registering a SIM card. We translate the US passport data page into Russian with the name transliterated into Cyrillic the way it appears in your Russian documents, if you have any, and can notarize the translation here. Confirm with the notary whether a translation certified in the US is accepted.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
