German transcript translation for a credential evaluation, graduate admission or a teaching license. We translate school reports and the Abiturzeugnis, university records such as the Notenspiegel or Transcript of Records, and Austrian and Swiss transcripts into certified English, with every grade left as the school wrote it.
On the German scale a 1 is the best mark and a 5 is a fail, which is the first thing a US reader gets wrong.
University grades, 1,0 to 5,0
German universities grade from 1,0 (sehr gut) to 4,0 (ausreichend), the lowest pass, with 5,0 (nicht ausreichend) as a fail, and write decimals with a comma. The translation keeps each number as printed and renders the German word in English, very good or sufficient. Converting to a US GPA is the evaluator's job, often with the modified Bavarian formula, so we do not add one.
Abitur points
The last two years of the Gymnasium are graded in points from 15 down to 0, not in grades. The Abiturzeugnis lists the points per course and semester, marks the Leistungskurse (advanced courses), adds the exam results and ends with the Durchschnittsnote. We keep the point table in its layout so an evaluator can see which courses were taken at the advanced level.
Austria and Switzerland
Austrian schools and universities use 1 (Sehr gut) to 5 (Nicht genügend), with 4 (Genügend) as the lowest pass. Swiss schools reverse the whole scale: 6 is the best mark and 4 the lowest pass. A Swiss transcript translated without a note can read as a run of failing grades, so we keep the grading key printed on the document, or add a short bracketed note when there is none.
Who is asking for your German academic transcript translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Credential evaluators
WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation of each page, sent alongside the official transcript.
Admissions offices and school districts accept a certified translation they can read next to the original. A PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a German academic transcript.
01
Send the official copy
An evaluator wants the sealed transcript from the registrar, not a self-printed grade list. Order the translation from the same copy the school issues.
02
Include the grading legend
The scale, the pass mark and the credit system are usually printed at the foot or on the back. Send that part too so it is translated with the grades.
03
Expect more than one page per sheet
A transcript sheet holds far more than 250 words. The quote counts words, not sheets, so a two-sheet transcript may price as four or five pages.
Details and pricing
What is included in a German academic transcript translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the academic transcript is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Does WES accept your German transcript translation?
Evaluators such as WES and ECE accept certified translations, and they also ask for the transcript itself, often sent by the university. Many German universities issue the Transcript of Records in English already, and those pages need no translation. Send us only the German pages, at $25 per page of up to 250 words.
What are ECTS credits and Leistungspunkte?
ECTS is the European credit system used since the Bologna reform, with 60 credits for a full year of study. German universities list them as ECTS or Leistungspunkte (LP). We keep the numbers and label them ECTS credits; how they convert to US semester hours is decided by the evaluator or the university.
Can you translate a US transcript into German?
Yes. A family moving to Germany may need a German translation of a US school transcript for placement at a Gymnasium, and teachers and nurses need one to have a US qualification recognized by a state authority. German universities usually accept English records, so check before ordering.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
