Korean apostille translation covers the apostille sheet and the document it is attached to, as one certified English file. Korea has issued apostilles since July 2007 through two offices: the 외교부 for public records such as a 기본증명서, 주민등록등본 or 범죄경력회보서, and the 법무부 for anything a Korean notary or court has signed.
A Korean apostille is a separate sheet attached to the document, not a stamp on it. The translation has to say which ministry issued it and whose signature it certifies.
Which ministry issued it
Of the ten numbered fields, field 2 names the official whose signature or seal is certified, field 3 that official's capacity, and field 7 the ministry that issued the apostille. A 가족관계증명서, 주민등록등본, 졸업증명서 or 범죄경력회보서 carries a 외교부 apostille that certifies the 구청, school or police signature. A 공증 page, a 번역공증, a 위임장 or a court 판결문 carries a 법무부 apostille that certifies the notary or court clerk. We translate the office and signer's title as printed, since a US reader who sees only the word apostille cannot tell a notary's certification from a registrar's.
The printed e-apostille
Since 2016 an applicant can issue the apostille online for the common 구청 and school certificates, and the result is a plain printout with a 발급번호 and a QR code rather than an embossed sticker. US recipients sometimes doubt it. The translation reproduces the verification number and the site named on the sheet so the recipient can check it, and we note that the sheet and the certificate under it were issued together as one electronic file.
Apostille on a 번역공증 bundle
Korean practice for a document going abroad is to have a translation notarized by a Korean 공증인 and then apostilled by the 법무부. The bundle arrives as an English translation, the Korean original, a Korean notary page with the translator's 선서 and an apostille sheet. The notary page and the apostille are in Korean, and the translator's declaration is not a certification in the form USCIS asks for. We translate those two pages and add our own signed certification covering the original, so the whole file reads in English.
Who is asking for your Korean apostille translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Registries and courts abroad
A civil registry, a court or a notary in another country reads the apostille as proof the US document is genuine, and wants the whole set translated into its language. Tell us the country in the order notes.
Consulates processing a citizenship, marriage or residency application accept a certified translation of the apostilled document. Add notarization at checkout if the checklist asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Korean apostille.
01
Send the apostille with the document it certifies
An apostille is a page stapled or glued to another document. Upload both, since the recipient reads the apostille only as proof that the document under it is genuine.
02
Scan the apostille whole, including the seal
The ten numbered fields, the seal and the signature of the issuing officer are what a foreign registry checks. Keep the full page in frame, including any ribbon or embossed stamp.
03
Get the apostille before you order
The translation has to cover the apostille page too. Have it issued first and then upload the complete set, so nothing is missing from the translation.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Korean apostille translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the apostille is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
USCIS asked for a certified translation. Do I need an apostille from Korea as well?
No. USCIS wants a complete English translation with the translator's signed certification, and does not ask for foreign civil records to be apostilled. The apostille matters for the reverse direction, and for some US courts, state agencies, universities and employers that want proof a Korean seal is genuine. If you already have one, send it; the sheet is a page at $25. If you do not, ask the recipient before asking a relative in Korea to apply for one.
Do you translate a US apostille into Korean for use in Korea?
Yes. A 구청 registering a US marriage or birth, a 가정법원 recognizing a US divorce, a bank or an inheritance case takes a US document with a Secretary of State apostille and a Korean translation of both. The apostilled FBI check and diploma for an E-2 teaching visa are usually accepted by Korean immigration in English, so ask before paying for that one.
My Korean certificate was issued in English. Does the apostille still need translating?
Often only in part. Korean universities issue English 졸업증명서 and 성적증명서, and the 주민등록등본 has been available in English since 2021. The apostille sheet itself is printed in Korean and English, with the ten standard fields. What remains in Korean is the issuing office seal, the signer's title and any handwritten notes. We translate those, certify the whole bundle, and leave the English text as issued.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
