Korean Diploma Translation

Korean diploma translation for WES, ECE, a US graduate school, a licensing board or an employer: the 졸업증명서 your university prints, the 학위기 on the wall, or the 고등학교 졸업증명서 from NEIS. Korean universities issue an English certificate on request, so the translation is for the ones they do not.

Written for Korean diploma records

졸업증명서, 학위수여증명서 or 학위기

A US evaluator says diploma; a Korean university has three documents that could mean it, and they are not interchangeable.

The certificate the school prints

The 졸업증명서 is a dated certificate of graduation printed by the 교무처 or from the university's web issuance page, naming the 학과, the date of graduation and the 학위등록번호. A 학위수여증명서 does the same for the degree itself and is what a 대학원 graduate orders. Both are one page, carry the 총장 seal and a 발급번호, and are what WES and ECE actually want; the ornamental diploma is not.

The 학위기 itself

The 학위기, the parchment handed over at the 졸업식, is written in a formal register, often vertically and in Hanja for older graduates, with the degree in forms like 공학사, 이학사, 문학사 or 경영학석사 and the closing line 위 사람은 ... 학위를 수여함. We translate the degree by its Korean field, Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, rather than flattening every one to a bachelor's degree. The 총장 and 학장 seals and the 학위등록번호 at the foot are translated too.

Junior colleges, high schools and medicine

A 전문대학 awards a 전문학사, an associate degree after two or three years, and evaluators read it differently from a 학사, so the translation keeps the distinction. A 고등학교 졸업증명서 comes from NEIS through 정부24 and names the school, the 교육청 and the date. For ECFMG, the 의과대학 diploma names the degree as 의학사, or 의무석사 for a medical graduate school, and we keep that title as printed rather than converting it to MD.

Who is asking for your Korean diploma translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

Credential evaluators

WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation sent with the original. The degree name stays in the original language beside the English.

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Korean diploma.

01

Scan the back of the diploma

Registration numbers, the ministry stamp and the book and folio entries are often printed on the reverse. Send both sides.

02

Send the companion document

A professional license, a graduation act or a transcript often goes with the diploma. Upload the set so the numbers and dates are translated consistently.

03

Tell us who the translation is for

An evaluator, a licensing board and a university each read the degree name differently. Say in the order notes where it is going.

Request a Quote

Should I send the 졸업증명서 or the 학위기 for a credential evaluation?
The 졸업증명서 or 학위수여증명서, issued recently, with the 성적증명서. WES and ECE want a dated institutional certificate, and many Korean universities will mail an English one in a sealed envelope, which removes the need for a translation. If the evaluator asks for the diploma as well, we translate the 학위기 separately; its only date is the graduation date.
My diploma is from the 1980s and written in Hanja. Can you translate it?
Yes. Older 졸업장 and 학위기 are printed vertically in mixed script, with the holder's name, the school and the degree in Hanja and the date in 단기 or 서기 years. We read the Hanja, convert a 단기 date to the Western year in a translator's note, and give the school its current name beside the historical one when it has merged or been renamed.
I am taking a job in Korea. Does my US degree need Korean?
Often. US graduates working in Korea submit their degree for an E-7 visa, for a 국가기술자격 exam that requires a degree, for the 한국연구재단 foreign doctorate registration or to an employer's HR office. The degree normally needs an apostille first, and the Korean office then takes the apostille and the translation together. We translate the diploma and the apostille certificate.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
