Korean marriage certificate translation for a spouse petition, a green card interview, a name change at the Social Security office or a US divorce filing. The document is the 혼인관계증명서, and for marriages before 2008 the 제적등본; we also translate a US marriage certificate into Korean for the consulate's 혼인신고.
In Korea the wedding has no legal effect. The marriage exists from the day the 혼인신고 is accepted at the 시, 구, 읍 or 면 office, and the certificate records that day.
The report date, not the wedding date
The 혼인관계증명서 (Marriage Relation Certificate) gives the 혼인신고일, the date the marriage report was filed, and a couple married at a 예식장 the year before may be surprised to see a later date on it. Our translation labels the field as the report date so an officer does not read it as the ceremony. A wedding in Korea produces no civil certificate of its own, so a hall's 결혼증명서 or a church certificate proves the ceremony and nothing else.
일반 or 상세, and whose certificate it is
A 일반 (general) version shows only the current spouse. A 상세 (detailed) version lists every marriage and divorce with its date, and that is the one USCIS expects, since an I-130 has to show that earlier marriages ended. The certificate is issued per person, so each spouse has their own, and the entries sit under 혼인사항 with the other spouse's 주민등록번호 or, for a foreign spouse, date of birth and nationality.
Marriages before 2008 and mixed marriages
A marriage registered before 2008 is on the 제적등본, under the 호주, with the wife's entry noting the 혼인신고 and her transfer from her father's register. A Korean married to a US citizen in Korea has a 혼인관계증명서 that records the foreigner's name in Hangul as the office transcribed it, and we keep that transcription with the passport spelling beside it so the two records can be matched.
Who is asking for your Korean marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Korean marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Korean marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Which document does USCIS want for a Korean marriage?
The 혼인관계증명서 in the 상세 version, with a certified translation, is the marriage certificate for USCIS and the Department of State. Add the 가족관계증명서 if the officer needs to see the children of the marriage. A copy of the 혼인신고서 form you filled in is not a civil record and will not stand in for it.
We married in the US. How do we report it in Korea?
A Korean citizen married abroad reports the marriage to the consulate or to a 구청 within three months of the wedding, with the US marriage certificate, a Korean translation that carries the translator's name and signature, and a copy of the spouse's passport. We prepare the translation in that form. The Korean office then enters the marriage on the Korean spouse's 혼인관계증명서.
I am the American spouse. Do I have a Korean marriage certificate of my own?
No. A foreigner has no Korean family register, so the marriage is recorded only on your Korean spouse's 혼인관계증명서, where you appear by name and nationality. That certificate is the one to translate for USCIS. If your spouse cannot order it, the 혼인신고수리증명서 issued when the report was accepted also shows the marriage.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
