Polish adoption documents translation for an I-800 petition, a US re-adoption, a visa interview or a search for birth records. A Polish adoption is a przysposobienie ordered by a sąd rejonowy, and the file that follows it includes the court's postanowienie, a new akt urodzenia and the Hague certificate from the Polish central authority. We translate all of it into certified English, and US dossiers into Polish.
A Polish family court does not issue an adoption certificate. It issues an order, and the civil registry rewrites the child's birth record on the strength of it.
The postanowienie o przysposobieniu
The order comes from the wydział rodzinny i nieletnich of a sąd rejonowy and names the kind of adoption: przysposobienie pełne, the ordinary full adoption; przysposobienie całkowite, the irrevocable form that follows a blanket consent the birth parents gave before the child was matched; or przysposobienie niepełne, which binds only the child and the adopters. The type decides whether the original parents still appear in any record, so the translation renders the Polish term and explains it in a translator's note instead of flattening all three to "adoption".
The new akt urodzenia and the odpis zupełny
After a full adoption the urząd stanu cywilnego draws up a new birth record listing the adopters as parents, and the earlier record is closed with a wzmianka. The odpis skrócony shows only the new version. The odpis zupełny, the full copy, carries the annotations and is what an adult adoptee orders when searching for birth family. USCIS wants the version that matches the court order; we translate the marginal annotations in full and say which copy you hold.
Hague paperwork in both directions
Americans adopting from Poland work through the central authority in the Ministerstwo Rodziny, Pracy i Polityki Społecznej and one of the adoption centres it has authorized, and send a home study, the I-800A approval and medical and financial papers in Polish. Coming back, the court order, the article 23 certificate of conformity and the child's Polish passport are translated into English for the I-800, the consular visa and later a state re-adoption or a US birth certificate. In recent years Poland has approved few cases beyond relatives adopting a child they already know, so most files today are intra-family.
Who is asking for your Polish adoption documents translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A state court recognizing a foreign adoption, or a vital records office issuing a US birth certificate, accepts a certified translation of the decree, notarized where the clerk asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Polish adoption documents.
01
Send the full adoption file in one order
The court decree, the consent of the birth parents, the home study and the child's new birth certificate are read together. One order keeps the names and dates consistent across all of them.
02
Include the stamps and the finality note
A foreign adoption decree is complete only with the court seal and the note that it is final. Scan the back of each page and any attached certificates.
03
Give us the child's name as it will be registered
Tell us the spelling the child's passport or visa application uses. The translation keeps the name as the record writes it and notes the English spelling.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Polish adoption documents translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the adoption documents is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Does the Polish central authority want our home study in Polish?
Yes. The dossier goes to Poland in Polish, and the adoption centre and the court read the Polish version. Our English to Polish translation is what US agencies use to prepare the file. Ask your agency whether Poland requires the final version from a tłumacz przysięgły, since Polish courts generally do for foreign documents, and we are not sworn translators in Poland.
I was adopted from Poland as a child and need my records. What do I need translated?
Usually the postanowienie from the court file, the odpis zupełny of your birth record with its annotations, and sometimes the pre-adoption record held by the USC or the court archive. The court file is requested from the sąd rejonowy that made the order, and an adult adoptee has the right to read it. We translate the Polish records into English and keep every name and date as written, including the name you were born with where the record still shows it.
Does a stepparent adoption in Poland count for a US visa?
A przysposobienie by a stepparent is a full adoption under Polish law and the court order says so. For a US immigration petition the questions are the age of the child at adoption and the period of legal custody and residence with the adopting parent; an immigration lawyer answers those. What they will ask us to translate is the postanowienie, the proof of the custody period and the new birth record, and we keep the court's date of the order visible since the age test runs from it.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
