Written for French adoption documents records

Plénière, simple, and what the birth record shows afterwards

French law has two adoptions, and the judgment says which one it is. The word matters, because the two leave different traces in the état civil.

Adoption plénière rewrites the acte de naissance

After an adoption plénière the judgment is transcribed on the birth registers of the child's place of birth, or at the Service central d'état civil in Nantes for a child born abroad, and the transcription serves as the new acte de naissance. The original acte is marked "adoption" and is no longer issued. An extrait shows the adopters as parents and nothing else. We translate the transcription as what it is, a judgment copied into the register, and keep its wording about the court and the date of the decision, since USCIS or a state court reads that date as the day the adoption became final.

Adoption simple keeps the first filiation

An adoption simple leaves the original parents on the acte and adds a mention in the margin. The child takes the adopter's surname added to their own, so the judgment may produce a double name, and keeps inheritance rights in the first family. US immigration rules on adopted children ask whether the adoption ended the legal relationship with the birth parents, so the translation names the form in French, gives "simple adoption" beside it and never calls it a full adoption, which would misstate what the French court decided. Adoption of a spouse's child in France is usually this form.

Haiti and francophone Africa

Haiti joined the Hague Convention in 2014, and a Haitian adoption now runs through the IBESR, which matches the child and issues the autorisation d'adoption, and a tribunal de première instance that renders the jugement d'adoption. Older Haitian files hold a notarized acte d'adoption and a jugement d'homologation instead. The DRC and Cameroon are not Hague countries, so their judgments go into an I-600 file with the orphan evidence, while Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Senegal and Madagascar are Hague countries with their own central authority and a certificate of conformity that we translate with the judgment.

Who is asking for your French adoption documents translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

Family courts and state registrars

A state court recognizing a foreign adoption, or a vital records office issuing a US birth certificate, accepts a certified translation of the decree, notarized where the clerk asks for it.

Certified translations

Central authorities and courts abroad

Adopting from another country, your home study and background checks usually need an apostille and a translation into that country's language.

Apostille service

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a French adoption documents.

01

Send the full adoption file in one order

The court decree, the consent of the birth parents, the home study and the child's new birth certificate are read together. One order keeps the names and dates consistent across all of them.

02

Include the stamps and the finality note

A foreign adoption decree is complete only with the court seal and the note that it is final. Scan the back of each page and any attached certificates.

03

Give us the child's name as it will be registered

Tell us the spelling the child's passport or visa application uses. The translation keeps the name as the record writes it and notes the English spelling.

We live in France and are adopting a child from the US. What needs translating?
The US side issues the home study, the consents and the final decree of adoption from a state court. The Mission de l'adoption internationale and the French consulate read them in French, and the procureur de la République in Nantes needs the decree to transcribe the adoption on the French registers. We translate those US papers into French. Ask the MAI whether a traducteur assermenté is required for the decree itself; we are not sworn translators in France and say so before you order.
What is the agrément, and does USCIS need it?
The agrément is the approval the conseil départemental gives prospective adopters after a social and psychological assessment, valid for five years, and it is the French counterpart of an approved US home study. USCIS asks for it when the adopting parents live in France or when a French approval sits in an I-800A file, and a US state court may want it in a recognition petition. We translate the arrêté d'agrément and the notice that goes with it, including the age range and number of children it covers.
I was adopted in France as a child. Which documents do I translate for a US passport or an N-600?
The copie intégrale of your current acte de naissance, which is the transcription of the judgment, and the judgment itself from the tribunal that made the order, which the greffe can copy for you. If you also hold your original acte or a copy from the court file, send it too. We translate whichever you have and keep the birth name where a document still shows it, since USCIS matches every name to the ones on your other records.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
