Russian adoption documents translation for the families who adopted from Russia before the 2013 ban and now need the решение суда об усыновлении, the свидетельство об усыновлении and the reissued birth certificate in certified English for an N-600, a US passport renewal or a college application, and for families who adopted in Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan.
What a Russian adoption file contains, and why the dates do not match
A Russian adoption produced one court document and then a fresh set of civil records that overwrite the child's original ones, so the file a family holds has two names and two birth certificates for one child.
The court decision
Adoption in Russia is granted by a court, not an agency: a решение of the районный or областной суд, five to fifteen pages, naming the заявители, the child, the орган опеки и попечительства that gave its заключение, and the дом ребёнка or детский дом that held the child. The operative part, усыновление for a boy and удочерение for a girl, orders the ЗАГС to change the child's surname, given name and patronymic, and sometimes the date and place of birth, which the Family Code allowed by up to three months for a child under one. We translate the full decision, including the closing lines on the appeal period and the date it entered into force, because the finality date is what USCIS reads.
Свидетельство об усыновлении and the new birth certificate
After the decision the ЗАГС issues a свидетельство об усыновлении and a new свидетельство о рождении listing the adoptive parents as the parents and the new name, with the original record sealed under тайна усыновления. The new certificate looks like any Russian birth certificate, which is why a passport agency or a school sometimes doubts it. The translation states the registration date and the issuing office, and the adoption certificate links the old and new names, so send both together even if the adoption certificate was never used.
Papers from the orphanage and the reverse direction
Older files hold the акт об оставлении ребёнка or the parent's согласие на усыновление, the medical history from the дом ребёнка with Soviet-style diagnoses such as перинатальная энцефалопатия and задержка психомоторного развития, and the vaccination card. A doctor or a disability evaluator in the US needs these in plain English with the Russian term beside it. Going the other way, a US step-parent adoption decree or an adult adoption order is translated into Russian for a Russian consulate when the child holds Russian citizenship, or for an inheritance case in Russia.
Who is asking for your Russian adoption documents translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A state court recognizing a foreign adoption, or a vital records office issuing a US birth certificate, accepts a certified translation of the decree, notarized where the clerk asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Russian adoption documents.
01
Send the full adoption file in one order
The court decree, the consent of the birth parents, the home study and the child's new birth certificate are read together. One order keeps the names and dates consistent across all of them.
02
Include the stamps and the finality note
A foreign adoption decree is complete only with the court seal and the note that it is final. Scan the back of each page and any attached certificates.
03
Give us the child's name as it will be registered
Tell us the spelling the child's passport or visa application uses. The translation keeps the name as the record writes it and notes the English spelling.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Russian adoption documents translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the adoption documents is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
We adopted from Russia in 2005. Which documents does USCIS or the passport agency want translated?
For an N-600 or a first US passport, usually the court decision, the new Russian birth certificate and the свидетельство об усыновлении, plus the child's Russian passport if it is in the file. If the child came on an IR-4 visa, a US readoption order may also be in the file, and that one is already in English. Budget for length: a court decision commonly runs six to ten pages.
Our Russian decree and birth certificate show a different birthdate than our US records. Can the translation fix that?
No, and it should not. The court was allowed to move the date, and the Russian certificate is correct as it stands. The translation reproduces each date as printed, and we add a translator's note pointing to the paragraph of the decision that ordered the change, so a passport examiner sees the two dates are the same child by court order rather than a typo. The same applies to a changed place of birth, which the decision may have set to the adoptive family's town.
Can you translate an adoption file from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan or Belarus?
Yes. Court decisions and ЗАГС certificates from these countries are in Russian or bilingual with Russian, and Kazakhstan's often arrive as eGov printouts with a QR code rather than stamped paper. Kyrgyz files add the заключение of the social development ministry and a договор о передаче ребёнка. The terms match Russian practice, усыновление, опека, приёмная семья, and we translate each certificate as a page at $25 with the issuing office named.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
