Polish college application translation for a student applying to a US university with a świadectwo dojrzałości, a świadectwo ukończenia liceum and letters from Polish teachers, and in the other direction for an American applying to a Polish university. We translate every certificate the Common App or the admissions office asks for.
A Polish secondary school does not keep a transcript the way a US high school does. The file is a set of end-of-year certificates plus the matura results, and each piece has its own format.
Świadectwo dojrzałości and its percentages
The matura certificate is issued by one of the eight Okręgowe Komisje Egzaminacyjne, not by the school. Since the 2015 format it reports each subject as a percentage and a wynik centylowy, the percentile against that year's candidates, and shows whether the subject was taken at poziom podstawowy or poziom rozszerzony. A US admissions office reads the extended-level scores much as it reads AP results, so the translation keeps both levels labelled and never merges them. A retake or an added subject arrives on a separate aneks, which we translate as its own page.
School certificates and the 1 to 6 scale
The świadectwo ukończenia liceum ogólnokształcącego or technikum, and the promotional certificates for the earlier years, carry grades from 1 to 6: celujący, bardzo dobry, dobry, dostateczny, dopuszczający and niedostateczny. We translate the grade names and keep the figures. Zachowanie, the conduct grade, runs from wzorowe to naganne, has no US equivalent, and goes over with its own scale explained in a translator's note rather than being dropped.
Teacher letters, and the reverse direction
A teacher's opinia or list polecający is translated in full, signature block and school stamp included, because the Common App wants the recommender's words rather than a summary. Americans heading the other way need their high school diploma and transcript in Polish for the rekrutacja at a Polish university, and many universities ask that the translation be made by a tłumacz przysięgły in Poland, which we are not. Check the faculty's admissions page before ordering.
Who is asking for your Polish college application translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Universities and admissions offices
Admissions offices accept a certified translation they can read next to the original. A PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
Applicants to US medical programs send transcripts and diplomas through ECFMG, which asks for an English translation of every document that is not in English.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Polish college application.
01
Send the whole packet in one order
Transcripts, the diploma, recommendation letters and the grading scale travel together. One order keeps the names, dates and course titles consistent across every page.
02
Separate the records from your essays
Admissions offices want official records translated word for word. Essays and statements are usually written in English by the applicant, so upload only what the school will read as evidence.
03
Count on more than one page per sheet
A transcript or a course description holds a lot of text. The quote counts words, not sheets, so a dense sheet may price as two or three pages.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Polish college application translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the college application is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Which pages of my Polish school record does a US university want?
Nearly always the świadectwo dojrzałości, both sides, and the świadectwo ukończenia szkoły. Some ask for the promotional certificates from each year of liceum as well, since those yearly certificates, four of them since the 2019 reform, are the closest thing Poland has to a transcript. Send the certificates the checklist names first and add the yearly ones only if the admissions office asks.
Is the matura the same as a US high school diploma?
Not quite. The świadectwo ukończenia szkoły proves you finished secondary school; the świadectwo dojrzałości is the exam result that gives access to university. US colleges usually ask for both, and some treat the extended-level matura subjects as advanced work. We translate both documents in full so the admissions office or a credential evaluator can decide how to count them.
I am an American applying to a Polish university. What goes into Polish?
Your high school diploma and transcript, and for a master's the bachelor's diploma with its transcript. Polish universities usually ask for an apostille on the US diploma first, then a translation of the apostilled document, and many also want a zaświadczenie that the diploma gives access to university study in the United States. We translate into Polish and can notarize; the faculty's rekrutacja page says whether it will take that or wants a tłumacz przysięgły.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
