What a Russian school leaver sends to a US admissions office
A Russian school issues one certificate at the end of grade 11, plus a grade sheet, and the state exam results live in a database rather than on paper. The application file has to be assembled from pieces.
Аттестат о среднем общем образовании and its приложение
The аттестат is the leaving certificate after grade 11, with the student's name, the school and the date; the приложение к аттестату is the one-page grade sheet listing each subject with a final mark of 5, 4 or 3 and the words отлично, хорошо, удовлетворительно, with no hours and no year-by-year record. Students who left after grade 9 hold an аттестат об основном общем образовании. An аттестат с отличием and the medal За особые успехи в учении mark the top students. ЕГЭ results without a certificate
Since 2014 the Единый государственный экзамен has had no paper certificate; the scores are a record on the Госуслуги portal or the official results page. A US college asking for results gets a printout or a screenshot, and we translate that printout, with the subject, the первичный балл and the тестовый балл on the 100-point scale, and the date. Some admissions offices treat the профильная математика and foreign-language papers like subject tests, so the subject names are given exactly.
Характеристика, olympiad diplomas and the reverse direction
A Russian teacher writes a характеристика, a formal character reference with the school stamp, rather than a personal recommendation letter, and we translate it in full so the recommender's wording reaches the Common App. A diploma from the Всероссийская олимпиада школьников or a перечневая олимпиада on the ministry list is translated with its level and the organizing body. - Which documents does a US university usually ask a Russian student for?
- The аттестат with its приложение, grade sheets for grades 9 through 11 if the school can issue them, ЕГЭ results if the college asks for them, and one or two teacher letters. For a transfer from a Russian university, the академическая справка with its course table. Financial documents for the I-20 are separate and are usually bank statements in Russian. Each page of up to 250 words is $25, so start with what the checklist names.
- My school only gave me one grade sheet. Do US colleges want year-by-year grades?
- Many do, because a US high school transcript shows every year. A Russian school can issue a справка об успеваемости or a table of marks from the классный журнал for grades 9, 10 and 11 on request, stamped by the director. We translate whatever the school provides, and the admissions office or an evaluator decides how to weigh it. Do not have the school convert marks into A to F; that is the evaluator's job.
- I am an American applying to a Russian university. What do I need translated?
- The high school diploma and transcript, and for a master's the bachelor's diploma with its transcript, translated into Russian. Russian universities take foreign students through their international office or the Russia.study quota, and both ask for an apostilled original with a notarized Russian translation; a recognition certificate may be needed unless the US school is on the exempt list.
