Portuguese criminal record translation to English of a Brazilian certidão de antecedentes criminais from the Polícia Federal, a state atestado de antecedentes, or a certidão de distribuição criminal from a Tribunal de Justiça, for the National Visa Center, USCIS, a US employer, a licensing board or an adoption agency. We also translate an FBI or state police check into Portuguese for Brazil.
Written for Portuguese (Brazil) criminal record records
Brazil has three kinds of clean-record paper
The federal police, the state police and the courts each certify something different, and a US checklist often names more than one.
The Polícia Federal certidão
Issued online at gov.br within minutes, it certifies from the SINIC database that no condenação com trânsito em julgado is on file, and it says so in one paragraph. It carries a 90-day validity, a certificate number and a QR code that anyone can check on the Polícia Federal site. When the system finds a homônimo, someone with the same name and mother's name, it issues a protocolo instead, and the person has to appear at a PF unit for a definitive certidão. We translate the certifying paragraph word for word, since "no final conviction on record" is narrower than "no criminal record" and the reader should see that.
The state atestado and the court certidão
Each state's Polícia Civil or Instituto de Identificação issues an atestado de antecedentes criminais covering that state's records, keyed to the RG number the state issued. The courts are separate again: the Tribunal de Justiça issues a certidão de distribuição de ações criminais, and the Justiça Federal its own, and these list cases filed against the person, not only convictions. When a certidão is positiva, each case is listed with its status, such as arquivado or extinta a punibilidade, and we translate that status as written instead of reducing it to clean or not clean.
The identifiers the certificate is keyed to
A Brazilian certificate searches by full name, nome da mãe, date of birth, RG with its órgão expedidor and CPF, and it prints all of them in the header. A woman who added a husband's surname, or dropped it after a divorce, may hold certificates under two names, and a US officer matching them needs both spelled exactly. The newer certificates are signed electronically under ICP-Brasil and carry a selo or a validation line at the foot. We reproduce every identifier in the order printed and translate the electronic signature block, because the recipient uses it to check the paper is genuine.
Who is asking for your Portuguese (Brazil) criminal record translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS and the National Visa Center
Consular processing asks for police certificates with a complete English translation and a signed certification. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Portuguese (Brazil) criminal record.
01
Get the certificate first, then the translation
Most police certificates are valid for a few months. Have the certificate issued, then upload it, so the translation and the original are current together.
02
Check which authority the checklist names
A state letter, a federal letter and a court record are different documents. Read the consulate or USCIS checklist and send the one it asks for, or all of them.
03
Keep the QR code and verification number in the scan
Online certificates carry a QR code or a verification code. They are translated with the rest and are how a consulate confirms the document is genuine.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Portuguese (Brazil) criminal record translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the criminal record is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Which certificate does the NVC or the US consulate want from Brazil?
Check the current reciprocity schedule for Brazil on the State Department site, because it names the document. Applicants are usually asked for the Polícia Federal certidão and a state certificate for each state where they lived, and the consulate may add a court certidão if a case shows up. Each is a single page, so translating all of them together costs little more than one.
My certificate is valid for 90 days. Does the translation expire with it?
The translation carries the date it was certified and does not expire on its own, but the recipient looks at the date on the Brazilian certificate. Order the translation as soon as the certidão is issued, and if the file is delayed past 90 days, pull a fresh certidão from gov.br; the new one usually matches the old apart from the number and date, and we translate it as a new document.
I need an FBI check in Portuguese for a Brazilian residence permit. Can you do that?
The Polícia Federal asks for a criminal certificate from each country where the applicant lived, apostilled and translated. The US Department of State apostilles the FBI Identity History Summary, and each state apostilles its own police check. If you apply inside Brazil, the PF wants a sworn Brazilian translation, which we cannot sign. A Brazilian consulate handling the visa in the US may take our certified one.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
