Brazilian marriage certificate translation to English for a spouse petition, a green card interview, proof of divorce or a name change, from the certidão de casamento issued by a Cartório de Registro Civil das Pessoas Naturais, in breve relato or inteiro teor. We also translate US marriage certificates into Portuguese for Brazil.
Written for Portuguese (Brazil) marriage certificate records
Three lines that matter on a certidão de casamento
A Brazilian marriage certificate is written as one paragraph, and three parts of it decide what your US paperwork should say.
Regime de bens
Every certificate states the property regime: comunhão parcial de bens, the default, comunhão universal, separação total, separação obrigatória where the law imposes it, or participação final nos aquestos. When there is a pacto antenupcial, the certificate cites the tabelionato and the book where it was drawn up. We translate the regime by name and keep the Portuguese in brackets, since a US court or an estate lawyer may need the exact term later.
Nome que passou a adotar
The certificate records the full name each spouse adopts after the marriage. A wife may add her husband's surname, keep her own or drop a maternal one, and since the 2002 Civil Code a husband may take his wife's. This line, not a separate name-change document, is what proves the new name in Brazil and in the US. The translation gives the pre-marriage name and the adopted one exactly as written, in the same order.
Averbações: the divorce is on the marriage certificate
Brazil does not issue a standalone divorce certificate. When a marriage ends, the divorce, whether by court judgment or by escritura pública at a tabelionato, is averbado in the margin of the marriage entry, and a fresh certidão de casamento com averbação de divórcio is the proof. The same margin records a separação, a change of regime, a death and corrections. We translate every averbação with its date and the authority it cites, because without it the certificate says the couple is still married.
Who is asking for your Portuguese (Brazil) marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Portuguese (Brazil) marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Portuguese (Brazil) marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Should I order the breve relato or the inteiro teor?
For a spouse petition the breve relato, the standard national model, is usually enough. Order the inteiro teor when the recipient wants the full register entry: a divorce, a second marriage, a pacto antenupcial or a correction is set out there in full, with the witnesses and the registrar. An inteiro teor often runs to two pages, and the quote shows the page count before you pay.
We had a casamento religioso. Does the church certificate count?
Only if it was registered. A casamento religioso com efeito civil is registered at the cartório after the ceremony and then produces an ordinary certidão de casamento, and that certidão is what to send. A church certificate on its own is not a civil record, and neither is an escritura pública de união estável, although we translate a união estável deed as evidence of the relationship when a checklist asks for it.
Do you translate a US marriage certificate into Portuguese for Brazil?
Yes, for the transcrição do casamento at a Brazilian consulate or at the 1º Ofício de Registro Civil, or for a spouse's residence permit. Brazil wants an apostille on the US certificate first. Inside Brazil the cartório will usually want a tradução juramentada by a sworn translator, while consulates often accept a certified translation, so ask the office which one it wants before ordering.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
