Portuguese diploma translation to English of a Brazilian diploma de graduação, mestrado or doutorado, the registro on its back, a diploma digital with its validation code, and a certificado de conclusão do ensino médio, for a credential evaluator, a university, ECFMG or a licensing board. We also translate US diplomas into Portuguese for revalidação in Brazil.
The back of a Brazilian diploma is half the document
A Brazilian degree is not valid until it is registered, and the registration lives on the verso. Translate only the front and an evaluator sends it back.
Registro under Lei 9.394
A university registers its own diplomas; a faculdade or centro universitário must have its diplomas registered by a university with that authority. The back of the diploma carries that registro, with the registering university, the livro, folha and number, the processo and the date, and it cites Lei 9.394/96. Evaluators and licensing boards check that line before anything else. We translate the verso in full, including the apostila of any later habilitação, which is a Brazilian annotation and not a Hague apostille.
Bacharelado, licenciatura, tecnólogo
Brazil grants three undergraduate degrees. A bacharelado is the closest to a US bachelor's; a licenciatura is a teaching qualification in a subject, such as Licenciatura em Letras; a tecnólogo is a shorter Curso Superior de Tecnologia. None converts cleanly, so the translation names the degree as the diploma does, keeps the Portuguese title in brackets and gives the grau, the course and the colação de grau date. Deciding what each is worth is the evaluator's job.
Diploma digital
Since 2019 Brazilian institutions have been issuing the diploma digital, a signed XML with a PDF representation and a validation code that anyone can check on the MEC's diploma validator. Many graduates only have the PDF. We translate the PDF as issued, carry the validation code and the address over, and state in the translation that the original is a digital document, so an evaluator knows why there is no seal.
Who is asking for your Portuguese (Brazil) diploma translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Credential evaluators
WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation sent with the original. The degree name stays in the original language beside the English.
Physicians trained abroad send their diploma and transcript through ECFMG, which asks for an English translation of every document that is not in English.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Portuguese (Brazil) diploma.
01
Scan the back of the diploma
Registration numbers, the ministry stamp and the book and folio entries are often printed on the reverse. Send both sides.
02
Send the companion document
A professional license, a graduation act or a transcript often goes with the diploma. Upload the set so the numbers and dates are translated consistently.
03
Tell us who the translation is for
An evaluator, a licensing board and a university each read the degree name differently. Say in the order notes where it is going.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Portuguese (Brazil) diploma translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the diploma is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
I only have my certificado de conclusão do ensino médio. Is that a diploma?
In Brazil, yes. A Brazilian high school issues a certificado de conclusão, not a diploma, and that certificate plus the histórico is what a US college or an evaluator means by a high school diploma. It is signed by the school's director and secretário and carries the school's authorization act from the state education council. We translate it under its own name, so it is not mistaken for a university diploma.
ECFMG needs my diploma de medicina. What do you send?
A translation of the full diploma, front and back, including the registro and the grau de Médico, delivered as a signed PDF with the certification statement. ECFMG wants the translation to match the diploma word for word and to be done by someone other than you. Order the histórico escolar of the medical course under its own page if the application asks for it; the CRM registration card is a separate document and not part of the diploma.
Do you translate a US diploma into Portuguese for revalidação in Brazil?
Yes. Revalidação of a US bachelor's and reconhecimento of a master's or doctorate go through a Brazilian public university, mostly via the Plataforma Carolina Bori. The diploma needs an apostille first, and the university's notice says whether it takes a certified translation or only a tradução juramentada, which we cannot provide. Our Portuguese translation suits an employer, a concurso or a school in Brazil, and we notarize it on request.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
