Russian criminal record translation for a consular visa interview, a green card, a work permit, an adoption or a professional licence, and into Russian for a residence permit in Russia or Kazakhstan. We translate the справка о наличии (отсутствии) судимости from the Russian МВД and the equivalent certificates from Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, with a signed certification.
The Russian certificate is one page with a long title, and the line under it carries a legal meaning that an officer has to be able to read exactly.
The МВД form, paper and electronic
The full name is справка о наличии (отсутствии) судимости и (или) факта уголовного преследования либо о прекращении уголовного преследования, issued by the information centre of the МВД for the region, or the ГИАЦ in Moscow. It comes on paper with a seal and a number, or as a PDF from Госуслуги signed with an electronic signature. The clean result reads сведений не имеется, there is no information, repeated for each of three checks: convictions, current prosecution and terminated prosecution. We translate that phrase literally, not as no criminal record.
When something is listed
A record cites the article of the Уголовный кодекс with its part and point, ч. 2 ст. 158 УК РФ, the court, the date and the sentence. The words after it decide the case: судимость погашена means the conviction has lapsed by passage of time, снята that a court lifted it early, условно a suspended sentence, амнистия an amnesty. The third check can show уголовное преследование прекращено по нереабилитирующим основаниям, a prosecution ended on grounds that do not clear the person, which USCIS treats differently from an acquittal, so the translation spells it out rather than shortening it.
Kazakhstan, Belarus and the rest
Kazakhstan issues its справка о наличии либо отсутствии судимости through the Комитет по правовой статистике of the Генеральная прокуратура, from egov.kz with a QR code, and since 2018 it also lists terminated cases. Belarus issues one through its МВД, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan through their interior ministries, often with a Kazakh, Uzbek or Kyrgyz heading above Russian text. The translation names the issuing office and the QR or verification number so the consulate can check it.
Who is asking for your Russian criminal record translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS and the National Visa Center
Consular processing asks for police certificates with a complete English translation and a signed certification. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Russian criminal record.
01
Get the certificate first, then the translation
Most police certificates are valid for a few months. Have the certificate issued, then upload it, so the translation and the original are current together.
02
Check which authority the checklist names
A state letter, a federal letter and a court record are different documents. Read the consulate or USCIS checklist and send the one it asks for, or all of them.
03
Keep the QR code and verification number in the scan
Online certificates carry a QR code or a verification code. They are translated with the rest and are how a consulate confirms the document is genuine.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Russian criminal record translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the criminal record is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
The certificate only shows my current surname. Is that a problem?
Sometimes. The МВД checks the names you put on the application, and a certificate requested under a married name alone may not show the maiden name it was checked against. Consulates want to see every name you have used, so ask for the справка with the прежние фамилии listed, or get a second one. The translation carries every name exactly as printed, spelled to match your passport, so the officer links the certificate to the rest of the file.
How old can the certificate be?
The Russian form prints no expiry, and Russian law sets none; the recipient does. The National Visa Center treats a police certificate as current for two years if nothing has changed, and employers set their own limit. Order the translation as soon as the certificate issues, since the translation is dated the day it is certified, and send the original with it.
I need a US background check translated into Russian for a Russian or Kazakh residence permit. Can you do it?
Yes. A РВП or ВНЖ in Russia and a ВНЖ in Kazakhstan both ask for a police certificate from the country you live in, apostilled and translated. For a US applicant that is the FBI Identity History Summary apostilled by the Department of State, or a state police check apostilled by that state. Russian migration offices require the translation to be certified by a notary in Russia, so we deliver a translation you can have certified there; Kazakhstan generally accepts a notarized translation.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
