Portuguese divorce decree translation to English for a new spouse petition, a US marriage license, a custody or support case or a name change, from a Brazilian sentença de divórcio, an escritura pública de divórcio or the certidão de casamento that carries the averbação. We also translate a US divorce decree into Portuguese for averbação or homologação in Brazil.
Written for Portuguese (Brazil) divorce decree records
Two ways to divorce in Brazil, and what each one leaves you holding
Since 2007 a Brazilian couple can divorce at a notary instead of a court, and the paper you have depends on which route you took.
Escritura pública de divórcio
A consensual divorce with no minor children, or since 2024 with the children's custody and support already settled in court, is done at a Tabelionato de Notas as an escritura pública, signed by both spouses and their advogado, often in a single appointment. The deed runs several pages and sets out the partilha de bens, any pensão alimentícia and whether a spouse returns to the nome de solteira. It is the decree. We translate it in full, with the tabelião's closing formula and the livro and folha, because a US court reads the whole deed as the settlement.
Sentença, trânsito em julgado, mandado de averbação
A court divorce from a Vara de Família ends with a sentença, then a certidão de trânsito em julgado showing it became final and a mandado de averbação sent to the cartório. A US recipient asking for the final decree wants the sentença and the trânsito em julgado together; the sentença alone does not show the date it took effect. Terms with no US equivalent, such as guarda compartilhada, convivência and alimentos, get a plain English gloss with the Portuguese kept.
Separação judicial and desquite
Brazil had no divorce until 1977. Older records show a desquite, a legal separation that did not end the marriage, and until 2010 most couples passed through a separação judicial before converting it to divorce. A separação did not free either spouse to remarry. When your file contains a separação and a later conversão em divórcio, we translate both and name each one in English for what it was, so USCIS can see which document ended the marriage.
Who is asking for your Portuguese (Brazil) divorce decree translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A county clerk issuing a marriage license, or a family court, needs to see the prior marriage ended. A certified translation of the decree is accepted, notarized where the office asks.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Portuguese (Brazil) divorce decree.
01
Send every page of the judgment
A decree is complete only with its reasoning, its resolutive points and the finality note or certificate. Pages missing from the middle leave the translation unable to show the divorce is final.
02
Add the registry act or the margin note
Where the divorce was recorded at a civil registry, the act or the note on the marriage record is often the page a clerk wants. Upload it with the judgment.
03
Tell us if only part was requested
If the recipient asked for the ruling alone, say so at checkout. Otherwise we translate the full document, which is what USCIS requires.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Portuguese (Brazil) divorce decree translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the divorce decree is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
USCIS asked for my divorce decree, but all I have is the marriage certificate with the averbação. Is that enough?
Often yes, since it names the court or the tabelionato, the date and the case number. If the checklist insists on the decree itself, ask the court for a certidão de inteiro teor of the sentença, or ask the tabelionato that drew up the escritura for a certidão or traslado of it. We translate that alongside the marriage certificate.
How many pages is a Brazilian divorce sentença?
A sentença homologatória of a consensual divorce is often two or three pages: the parties, the judge's ruling and the terms the couple agreed. A contested divorce can run to ten or more, and the court's certidão de inteiro teor adds the trânsito em julgado and the stamps. The quote shows the page count before you pay. Tell us if the recipient only wants the dispositivo, the operative part, and the rest can be left out.
Can you translate a US divorce decree into Portuguese so I can remarry in Brazil?
Yes. A US decree has to be recognized in Brazil before you can remarry there. Since 2016 a simple consensual divorce, with no ruling on children, support or property, can be averbado directly at the cartório that holds the marriage; anything more goes to the Superior Tribunal de Justiça for homologação. Both routes want the decree apostilled and translated by a Brazilian tradutor juramentado. We are not sworn in Brazil, so our version is for your lawyer, for family members, or for a consulate that takes a certified translation.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
