Ukrainian marriage certificate translation to English for a spouse petition, Uniting for Ukraine, TPS or a name change at the SSA or DMV, from the current свідоцтво про шлюб, the 1990s свідоцтво про одруження and Soviet свидетельство о браке. Both spouses' names follow their passports.
Written for Ukrainian marriage certificate records
Reading a свідоцтво про шлюб
The certificate is one page, but it records two surnames for each spouse, and that is where translations go wrong.
Surnames before and after
The certificate gives each spouse's surname, name and patronymic at the time of the marriage, then a line for the surname taken after registration (прізвище після державної реєстрації шлюбу). A wife who kept her name shows the same surname twice; one who took her husband's shows both; a double surname is also possible. We translate both lines in full and follow the passport spelling for the current surname, because this certificate is usually what proves the name change.
Which office, which record
Older certificates name the office as РАГС or ЗАГС and modern ones as the відділ ДРАЦС; in villages the сільська рада registered marriages and its stamp appears instead. Every version cites the актовий запис number and the registration date, and those are what a later extract or duplicate is matched against. The 1990s form titled свідоцтво про одруження is the same document under an older name, and the translation gives the title as printed.
Married in occupied territory
A marriage registered by the occupation authorities in Crimea or the Donbas after 2014 is not valid in Ukraine, and the Russian-language certificate they issued is not a Ukrainian record. The route is a Ukrainian court ruling establishing the fact of the marriage, followed by registration at any ДРАЦС office, which issues a normal свідоцтво. We translate the ruling and the new certificate together, and the occupation certificate too if a checklist wants to see it.
Who is asking for your Ukrainian marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Ukrainian marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Ukrainian marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Does the marriage certificate show a later divorce?
No. A Ukrainian marriage certificate records the marriage only. Divorce is a separate act with its own свідоцтво про розірвання шлюбу, and a court divorce is entered at ДРАЦС afterwards and certified the same way. For a petition after an earlier marriage, send that marriage certificate and the divorce certificate, and we translate both so the dates and the record numbers line up.
Will the SSA or DMV accept the translation as proof of my new surname?
In Ukraine the marriage certificate is the document that proves a surname taken at marriage, and US offices read it the same way once it is translated. The translation shows the pre-marriage and post-marriage surnames on separate lines as the original does. If your Ukrainian passport was reissued in the new name, send it as well so the romanized spellings match across the file.
We married abroad or at a Ukrainian consulate. Which certificate do I send?
A marriage registered at a Ukrainian consulate is recorded like any other and the certificate looks the same, so send that. A marriage between Ukrainians under another country's law is proved by that country's certificate, which we translate under its own language with any apostille attached, and Ukraine recognizes it without re-registration.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
