Ukrainian transcript translation to English for WES, ECE or another credential evaluator, a university admissions office, a school district or a licensing board. A Ukrainian transcript is usually the додаток до диплома, the supplement issued with the diploma, or the додаток до атестата from school; students who left a course unfinished hold an академічна довідка instead.
Hours, credits and three grading scales on one Ukrainian transcript
A Ukrainian додаток lists every subject with its hours and a grade, and the grade may be on a five-point scale, a hundred-point scale, an ECTS letter or the word зараховано. The translation has to keep all of them.
The university додаток and its scales
University supplements print each course with годин, the academic hours, and since the 2010s with кредити ЄКТС, where one credit is thirty hours. Grades appear as відмінно, добре and задовільно, often beside a score out of 100 and an ECTS letter from A to E, and pass-fail courses are marked зараховано. We translate the words as excellent, good and satisfactory, keep the numbers and letters as printed, and convert nothing to a US GPA, since the evaluator does that from the original scale.
Курсова, практика and the state exam
A Ukrainian transcript records things US transcripts leave out: курсова робота, the term paper written each year; виробнича and переддипломна практика, the placements with their weeks; the державний or атестаційний екзамен; and the defence of the дипломна or кваліфікаційна робота with its topic. Evaluators count these toward the degree, so each line is translated with its hours and its grade rather than dropped as a non-course.
School transcripts on a twelve-point scale
The додаток до свідоцтва про здобуття повної загальної середньої освіти, the sheet attached to the school leaving certificate, grades on a twelve-point scale introduced in 2000, where 10 to 12 is високий рівень. Certificates from before 2000 use the Soviet five-point scale, with the same words for the top three marks as a university diploma. A US high school wants the scale named, so the translation carries a note stating which scale the school used and leaves the numbers alone.
Who is asking for your Ukrainian academic transcript translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Credential evaluators
WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation of each page, sent alongside the official transcript.
Admissions offices and school districts accept a certified translation they can read next to the original. A PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Ukrainian academic transcript.
01
Send the official copy
An evaluator wants the sealed transcript from the registrar, not a self-printed grade list. Order the translation from the same copy the school issues.
02
Include the grading legend
The scale, the pass mark and the credit system are usually printed at the foot or on the back. Send that part too so it is translated with the grades.
03
Expect more than one page per sheet
A transcript sheet holds far more than 250 words. The quote counts words, not sheets, so a two-sheet transcript may price as four or five pages.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Ukrainian academic transcript translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the academic transcript is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
WES wants my transcript sent by the university. Do I still need a translation?
WES asks Ukrainian institutions to send the diploma and the додаток directly, and it accepts a translation sent by you separately, so check the document requirements for Ukraine on the WES site for your evaluation type before ordering. ECE and most universities take the translation from the applicant. Either way the translation has to match the original page for page, which is how we lay it out.
My university is in occupied territory and cannot issue a new додаток. What can I send?
Send what you have: the original додаток, a scan of it, or the залікова книжка, the student record book with each exam signed by the lecturer. The record book is not an official transcript, so ask the evaluator or the university whether it will take one with an explanation; some do during the war. We translate it page by page with each signature noted. Universities displaced from Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea reissue documents from their new addresses, and the stamp then names the new city.
Will you translate the course titles literally or match them to US course names?
Literally, with a plain English rendering. Основи охорони праці becomes Fundamentals of Occupational Safety, Політологія becomes Political Science, and a subject with no US counterpart, such as Українознавство, keeps its name with a short English gloss. Evaluators compare the titles with the hours and the program, and a course renamed to look like a US one only raises questions.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
