Written for Ukrainian birth certificate records

Which Ukrainian birth certificate do you have?

The certificate has been redesigned more than once since 1991, and many adults still hold the Soviet one.

Soviet-era, in Russian

A certificate issued before 1991 is a small booklet printed in Russian and Ukrainian with the entries filled in by hand, usually in Russian. The place of birth reads Ukrainian SSR and the city may carry its old name. We translate the Russian entries, note the issuing republic as printed, and give the city its present spelling in brackets.

Modern certificates and duplicates

Post-independence certificates are a single A4 sheet with a series and number and the ДРАЦС office stamp. If the original was lost, or stayed behind in occupied territory, the registry issues a повторне свідоцтво, a duplicate marked as such, which carries the original registration date. The translation keeps the word duplicate on it, because the dates would otherwise look wrong.

The parents line and the nationality field

Soviet certificates record each parent's національність, and that line is translated as nationality, not citizenship, because it meant ethnicity. Modern certificates drop it. Both name the parents with patronymics, which stay in full. If your mother later changed her surname, the certificate still shows her name at the time of your birth, and the translation does too.

Who is asking for your Ukrainian birth certificate translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

US passports and the Department of State

The Department of State wants the translation notarized. Add notarization at checkout and we handle the rest.

Notarized translations

Consulates abroad

Consulates receive the translation of a US document, often with an apostille on the original. Tell us the consulate in your order notes.

Apostille service

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Ukrainian birth certificate.

01

Scan the whole page

Include the back, the margins and any marginal notes. A later correction or a recognition of paternity is often written in the margin, and the recipient needs to see it translated.

02

Give us the English spelling of each name

If your passport or green card spells a name without an accent, tell us at checkout. The translation keeps the names as the certificate writes them and notes the spelling you use.

03

Order the format the recipient asked for

If they want the long form, send the long form. We translate what you upload and cannot add parents' details that a short-form extract leaves out.

Ukrainian Birth Certificate FAQ

Most questions about pricing and turnaround can be answered faster by requesting a quote.

Request a Quote

My birth certificate is in Russian. Is it still a Ukrainian document?
Yes, if it was issued in the Ukrainian SSR or by a Ukrainian registry office. We translate it from Russian, state on the translation that the original is in Russian, and romanize the place names the Ukrainian way, so the certificate sits beside your Ukrainian passport without confusion.
The original is in occupied territory. Can you translate a duplicate or a Diia copy?
Yes. A повторне свідоцтво issued by any Ukrainian registry is a full replacement, and a certificate downloaded from Diia prints with a QR code that is noted in the translation. Send whichever you have. If neither is possible, ask the registry for a витяг from the state register first.
Do you need an apostille before translating?
No. Translation and apostille are separate steps. USCIS does not ask for an apostille on a birth certificate; some recipients abroad do, and in that case the apostille comes from the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice and we translate it along with the certificate.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
