Ukrainian divorce decree translation to English for USCIS, a US court or a marriage license clerk who needs proof that an earlier marriage ended, and from English into Ukrainian when a US divorce has to be shown in Ukraine. A Ukrainian divorce is proved by one of two papers, and which one you hold decides what we translate.
Ukraine divorces couples two ways. A couple with no minor children can divorce at a ДРАЦС office; everyone else goes to court, and since 2010 a court divorce produces no certificate at all.
The court рішення and its stamp
A divorce through the court ends with a рішення суду, a judgment from a district court such as the Шевченківський районний суд міста Києва, with a case number and an operative part that opens with Вирішив. The judgment proves the divorce only once it has набрало законної сили, taken legal effect, which the court marks with a stamp and a date on the copy it hands out. We translate the whole judgment, stamp included, because USCIS asks for the date the divorce became final, and that date is on the stamp, not in the text.
The ДРАЦС свідоцтво про розірвання шлюбу
A couple that agrees and has no children under 18 files a joint application at a ДРАЦС office and, a month later, each spouse receives a свідоцтво про розірвання шлюбу. It names both spouses, the surname each carries after the divorce, the registration date and the актовий запис number,. Before 2010 a court divorce had to be registered at the registry office as well, so people divorced in the 1990s and 2000s often hold both the judgment and a certificate, and the Soviet свидетельство о расторжении брака is the same certificate in Russian.
Default judgments and old separations
Many Ukrainian divorces are granted with one spouse absent, as a заочне рішення, a default judgment, and some were filed years after the couple stopped living together. The judgment then cites the date of the marriage, the date the couple separated and the date of the ruling, and a US officer reading an English version can take one for another. We label each date the way the court does and translate the reasoning in full, since a partial translation of a judgment is a reason for a request for evidence.
Who is asking for your Ukrainian divorce decree translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A county clerk issuing a marriage license, or a family court, needs to see the prior marriage ended. A certified translation of the decree is accepted, notarized where the office asks.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Ukrainian divorce decree.
01
Send every page of the judgment
A decree is complete only with its reasoning, its resolutive points and the finality note or certificate. Pages missing from the middle leave the translation unable to show the divorce is final.
02
Add the registry act or the margin note
Where the divorce was recorded at a civil registry, the act or the note on the marriage record is often the page a clerk wants. Upload it with the judgment.
03
Tell us if only part was requested
If the recipient asked for the ruling alone, say so at checkout. Otherwise we translate the full document, which is what USCIS requires.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Ukrainian divorce decree translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the divorce decree is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
I only have the court judgment, no divorce certificate. Is that enough for USCIS?
Yes, if the judgment carries the mark that it took legal effect. For a court divorce after 2010 the ДРАЦС office does not issue a certificate, and the stamped judgment is the only proof that exists. If your copy has no stamp, ask the court that ruled for a copy with the набрання законної сили mark; court copies can be requested through the court's office or the Електронний суд system, and we translate whichever copy you receive.
The judgment also orders child support. Is that part translated?
Yes, the whole judgment is translated, and USCIS or a family court will read those lines. Ukrainian courts usually set аліменти as a share of the payer's income, a quarter for one child and a third for two, sometimes with a minimum in hryvnias, rather than a fixed monthly sum. We translate the share as written and keep any custody arrangement for the child in the court's own words.
Can you translate a US divorce decree into Ukrainian?
Yes. A US divorce is usually recognized in Ukraine without a court procedure, but the ДРАЦС office or consulate registering a new marriage wants the decree with an apostille and a Ukrainian translation. We translate the decree, including the property and custody pages if they are part of it, and keep the apostille wording on its own page.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
