Ukrainian ID card translation to English for USCIS, TPS, a bank, a notary or an employer. The ID-картка is the паспорт громадянина України in card form, and because the card carries no address and no marital status, the papers that come with it are usually part of the order.
The card replaced the booklet in January 2016. It fits on one side of a page, but it moved information around, and a US reader needs to know what is now missing from it.
The fields on the card
The front gives the surname, name and patronymic in Ukrainian with the surname and name transliterated beneath, the date of birth, sex, a nine-digit document number with no series, and the holder's signature. The back carries the place of birth, the issuing authority as a four-digit code such as 8001, the date of issue, the expiry date and the УНЗР, the unique record number in the demographic register, in a form like 19900101-12345. We translate every label, spell out the issuing code as a State Migration Service office, and keep the УНЗР and the document number exactly as printed, because they are what a verifier matches.
No address on the card
The booklet showed the registered address as a stamp. The card stores it on the chip and prints nothing, so proof of address is a separate paper: a довідка про реєстрацію місця проживання for cards issued before the 2021 reform, and since then a витяг з реєстру територіальної громади issued through a ЦНАП. A bank, a landlord or USCIS asking for an address wants that extract beside the card. We translate it as its own page with the council or ЦНАП that issued it named in full.
Expiry, the chip and the Diia copy
A card issued at 14 runs four years and an adult's ten, so an expired card is common among people who left in 2022 and could not renew. The chip holds the photo, the signature and the address; nothing on it needs translating. The card never shows marital status or children, so a marriage or a child is proved by the certificate, never by the ID.
Who is asking for your Ukrainian id card translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
An ID card offered as proof of identity or date of birth is accepted with a certified translation. A few offices want it notarized as well, so check with your office before you order.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Ukrainian id card.
01
Scan both sides
The issuing office, the expiry date and the address are usually on the back. Upload the front and the back in one order so the translation covers the whole card.
02
Give us the spelling you use in English
The translation shows the name as the card prints it and notes the spelling on your passport or green card. Say which at checkout so the two documents match.
03
A phone photo works if every character is readable
Lay the card on a plain surface, avoid glare on the hologram and take one picture per side with the whole card in frame.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Ukrainian id card translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the id card is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
USCIS asked for a passport, and I have only the ID card. Is it the same document?
Not quite. The ID-картка is Ukraine's internal passport, and its printed title is паспорт громадянина України, which the translation keeps. It proves identity and citizenship but is not a travel document. If the checklist means the passport you travel on, the card does not replace it; send it as identity evidence and ask the office whether it accepts it.
Why does my ID card have no series, and where is my tax number?
Cards issued since 2016 carry a nine-digit number alone; the series letters belonged to the booklet. The tax number, the РНОКПП, is printed on the back only if you asked for it when the card was made, and otherwise it sits on the chip and on a separate paper from the tax service. When a US form asks for a passport number, the nine digits are the answer, and the translation leaves them untouched.
My card expired while I was abroad. Can you still translate it?
Yes. We translate the card as it stands and the expiry date stays as printed. An expired ID-картка is still a record of identity, and the office you give it to decides what it counts for beside a travel passport or a Diia copy. A renewal is possible through the Паспортний сервіс offices abroad, and a new card gets a new nine-digit number while the УНЗР stays the same, so tell the recipient which card the translation came from.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
