Written for Vietnamese id card records

Four cards, two numbers, one person

Vietnam has replaced its ID card three times since 2012, and a family's file often holds more than one. The translation's job is to show they belong to the same person.

Nine digits to twelve

The old chứng minh nhân dân, issued by the Công an of the province, carried a nine-digit number. The twelve-digit CMND of 2012, the căn cước công dân of 2016, the chip card of 2021 and the căn cước of 2024 all carry the twelve-digit số định danh cá nhân, which does not change when the card is replaced. Someone whose marriage certificate or bank record shows the nine-digit number can get a giấy xác nhận số CMND, a confirmation that links the two numbers. We translate that confirmation with the card, so a US officer can match a record from 2008 with one from 2023.

Fields the old card has and the new one drops

The back of the nine-digit CMND lists dân tộc, tôn giáo, the religion, two fingerprints and dấu vết riêng và dị hình, distinguishing marks, written out as something like a scar two centimeters from the corner of the left eye. The căn cước of July 2024 drops the fingerprints and quê quán, replaces nơi thường trú with nơi cư trú, and adds nơi đăng ký khai sinh, the place the birth was registered. We translate every field as printed, including the scar, because that is what an officer compares to the photo.

The expiry date follows the holder's age

A căn cước công dân or căn cước is printed Có giá trị đến, valid until, with a date set by the holder's age: it is renewed at 25, 40 and 60, and a card issued less than two years before one of those birthdays runs to the next one. The nine-digit CMND was valid for fifteen years and stopped being valid altogether at the end of 2024. An expired card still turns up in files as the document named on a marriage certificate or a land title, and we translate it with its dates as they stand.

Who is asking for your Vietnamese id card translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

State DMVs and Social Security offices

An ID card offered as proof of identity or date of birth is accepted with a certified translation. A few offices want it notarized as well, so check with your office before you order.

IRCC

IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Vietnamese id card.

01

Scan both sides

The issuing office, the expiry date and the address are usually on the back. Upload the front and the back in one order so the translation covers the whole card.

02

Give us the spelling you use in English

The translation shows the name as the card prints it and notes the spelling on your passport or green card. Say which at checkout so the two documents match.

03

A phone photo works if every character is readable

Lay the card on a plain surface, avoid glare on the hologram and take one picture per side with the whole card in frame.

Vietnamese ID Card FAQ

Most questions about pricing and turnaround can be answered faster by requesting a quote.

Request a Quote

My CMND has expired. Will USCIS still accept a translation of it?
As evidence of who you were when an older document was issued, yes. A 2010 marriage certificate names the CMND number its holder presented that day, and the translated card shows the officer that number and the photo. For current identity, send the căn cước or căn cước công dân you hold now in the same order, and the translator notes that both numbers belong to one person.
The chip card already has English labels. Do I still need a translation?
The labels are in English; the entries are not. Kinh, Không, an address written as thôn, xã, huyện and tỉnh, the issuing officer's title on the back and the date of issue are all in Vietnamese. A translation puts those into English with the labels. Both sides of a card together are well under 250 words, so the card is one page at $25.
The address on my card names a district and province that no longer exist. Is that a problem?
No. In July 2025 Vietnam merged its provinces from 63 to 34 and removed the district level, so millions of cards still show a huyện or a tỉnh that has since been folded into another. The card stays valid. We translate the address as printed and do not update it, since the translation has to match the card. If a newer document in the same file shows the new place name, tell us and the translator adds a note linking the two.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
