Vietnamese marriage certificate translation to English for a spouse petition, a CR-1 or K-3 visa, or a name or status change, from the Giấy chứng nhận kết hôn issued by a Ủy ban nhân dân, a trích lục kết hôn and pre-1975 hôn thú records. Each name is kept in its Vietnamese order with every diacritic.

What a Giấy chứng nhận kết hôn records
The certificate has been a one-page form for decades. What changes between issues is who signed it and which numbers it carries.
The fields on the certificate
Under the Law on Civil Status the certificate gives each spouse's full name, date of birth, dân tộc, quốc tịch, nơi cư trú and the number of the identity document (CMND, CCCD or passport), then the registration date, the signature or fingerprint of both spouses and the signature and seal of the chairman of the Ủy ban nhân dân. Dân tộc and quốc tịch are both printed and are translated as ethnic group and nationality, never merged into one.
Two originals, and the extract
Each spouse receives an original, a bản chính, and the registry keeps the entry in the Sổ đăng ký kết hôn, printing the book number (Quyển số) and the entry number (Số) on the certificate. If both originals are gone, the registry issues a trích lục kết hôn, an extract from the register, with the same facts but a different title and layout. We translate the title as printed, so the recipient can tell an extract from the certificate.
Who signed it: xã, huyện or Sở Tư pháp
A marriage between two Vietnamese citizens is registered at the commune or ward, the UBND xã or phường. A marriage with a foreigner was registered at the provincial Sở Tư pháp before 2016 and at the district UBND (cấp huyện) since. The certificate for a mixed marriage often arrives with the foreign spouse's papers stapled behind it. We name the issuing office exactly as printed, because the level of office tells a consular officer which rules applied.
Who is asking for your Vietnamese marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Vietnamese marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Vietnamese marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
We married before 1975, or never registered. What do we send?
Marriages in the former South were recorded in a hôn thú or a trích lục bộ hôn thú from the village or district office, often typed, and we translate those. Couples who lived together as husband and wife before 3 January 1987 are treated as married under Vietnamese law without a certificate; proof for a US petition then comes from other records, such as the children's giấy khai sinh naming both parents, or the household book. Send what you have and we translate it as one set.
What is a Giấy xác nhận tình trạng hôn nhân, and do you translate it?
Yes. The certificate of marital status, issued by the UBND of the commune where you are registered, states that you are single, divorced or widowed, and is valid for six months. It is needed to marry a Vietnamese citizen in Vietnam and for some fiancé visa files. It is one page, so it is $25, and it goes in the same order as the marriage certificate.
Do you translate a US marriage certificate into Vietnamese?
Yes, for ghi chú kết hôn, the recording of a foreign marriage in the Vietnamese civil register, or for a spouse's visa exemption or residence card. Vietnam is not party to the Apostille Convention, so the US certificate is legalized through a Vietnamese embassy or consulate first, and the translation is then notarized in Vietnam. Ask the UBND or the consulate which translation it accepts before ordering.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
