Vietnamese diploma translation to English for a credential evaluation, a US university, a state licensing board or ECFMG, and from English into Vietnamese for degree recognition in Vietnam. We translate the bằng tốt nghiệp trung học phổ thông from a Sở Giáo dục và Đào tạo and the bằng cử nhân, kỹ sư, bác sĩ, thạc sĩ and tiến sĩ signed by a university's hiệu trưởng.
Cử nhân, kỹ sư, bác sĩ: what the title on a Vietnamese degree tells an evaluator
The degree title carries the length and kind of program in one word, and the layout of the diploma shows when it was issued.
The degree titles
A bằng cử nhân is a four-year bachelor's degree. A bằng kỹ sư is the five-year engineer's degree from schools such as Đại học Bách khoa, a bằng dược sĩ the five-year pharmacy degree and a bằng bác sĩ the six-year medical degree. Then come the thạc sĩ and the tiến sĩ. Older diplomas are a bằng tốt nghiệp đại học naming the ngành, the field. We translate kỹ sư as Engineer's degree and bác sĩ as Doctor of Medicine rather than flattening both to bachelor, and leave the equivalence to the evaluator, which is what WES and ECE ask of a translation.
What was dropped in 2020
Since 1 March 2020 a university diploma no longer prints the hình thức đào tạo, whether the program was chính quy, vừa làm vừa học or từ xa; that line moved to the phụ lục văn bằng, the diploma supplement. Diplomas issued before then print it, with the xếp loại. Every diploma carries a số hiệu, the serial number, and a số vào sổ cấp bằng, the entry in the issuing register, and an evaluator verifies the degree with those two numbers. Recent diplomas print Vietnamese on the left and the university's own English on the right; we translate the Vietnamese side and note where the printed English differs.
The high school diploma and the temporary certificate
The bằng tốt nghiệp trung học phổ thông is issued by the provincial Sở Giáo dục và Đào tạo, signed by its director, months after the June exam. Until it arrives, the school issues a giấy chứng nhận tốt nghiệp tạm thời, a temporary certificate, and a US college will take a translation of that for a conditional offer with the diploma to follow. Older leavers hold a bằng tốt nghiệp bổ túc văn hóa from the continuing education stream, and those who finished school in the South before 1975 hold a Chứng chỉ Tú tài, which we translate as a baccalaureate certificate under its own name.
Who is asking for your Vietnamese diploma translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Credential evaluators
WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation sent with the original. The degree name stays in the original language beside the English.
Physicians trained abroad send their diploma and transcript through ECFMG, which asks for an English translation of every document that is not in English.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Vietnamese diploma.
01
Scan the back of the diploma
Registration numbers, the ministry stamp and the book and folio entries are often printed on the reverse. Send both sides.
02
Send the companion document
A professional license, a graduation act or a transcript often goes with the diploma. Upload the set so the numbers and dates are translated consistently.
03
Tell us who the translation is for
An evaluator, a licensing board and a university each read the degree name differently. Say in the order notes where it is going.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Vietnamese diploma translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the diploma is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
I am a physician applying through ECFMG. Which documents do you translate?
The bằng bác sĩ, the bảng điểm for all six years and, if you practiced, the chứng chỉ hành nghề, the practice license issued by a Sở Y tế or the Bộ Y tế. ECFMG wants each document in Vietnamese together with a word-for-word English translation, so we translate every line including the seal text and the register numbers. Order them together so the name, the school and the dates match across the set.
My diploma is from a trường cao đẳng or a trường trung cấp. Is it a degree?
Not a bachelor's. A bằng tốt nghiệp cao đẳng is a three-year college diploma that evaluators usually treat as an associate degree, and a bằng tốt nghiệp trung cấp is a one- to two-year vocational diploma. From 2017 these schools answered to the labour ministry rather than the education ministry, except teacher-training colleges, and in 2025 they moved back to education. We translate the title and the ministry as printed, so the evaluator can place it.
Do you translate a US degree into Vietnamese for recognition in Vietnam?
Yes. The Cục Quản lý chất lượng of the education ministry recognizes foreign degrees, a step called công nhận văn bằng that public employers and graduate schools in Vietnam ask for. The file includes a Vietnamese translation of the diploma and the transcript. We translate both and can notarize the translation; the office may still want a translation notarized in Vietnam, so check its current list before you order.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
