Arabic Name Change Translation

Arabic name change translation of the decision, ruling or decree that changed a name in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco or the Gulf, with the civil register entry that records it, into certified English for USCIS, Social Security or a DMV. We also translate US court name change orders into Arabic for a consulate. Many Arabic "name changes" are really spelling or surname choices, and we say which is which.

How a name changes in the Arab world, and the paper it leaves

Arab countries change names by administrative committee, by court ruling or by decree, almost never by a certificate you can hand over, so the proof is usually a decision plus the corrected record.

Egypt: the name committee

Under the Civil Status Law of 1994 a change of first name or surname goes to a committee at the Civil Status Authority chaired by a public attorney, which issues a decision; a clerical correction, تصحيح قيد, is done at the registry, and a disputed entry needs a court ruling. The decision is applied to the birth certificate first, then the national ID, and other papers are updated from the corrected record. We translate the decision with its file number and the old and new names, so the US reader sees the link between a diploma in one name and a passport in another.

Iraq, Jordan and Morocco

An Iraqi who changes a name or surname applies to the Directorate of Nationality and Civil Status, and the request is announced in a newspaper so objections can be raised before the record and the national card are reissued. Jordan changes a registered name by a court ruling filed with the Civil Status and Passports Department. In Morocco a first name is changed by court judgment, and a family name only by decree on the proposal of the High Commission for Civil Status.

Changes that are not changes

An Arab woman keeps her father's name chain at marriage, so a US spouse known as Mrs. Haddad has no Arabic paper for that name; the marriage certificate is the link. A man whose Egyptian records give five names and whose passport prints three has not changed his name, nor has a Yusuf whose brother's passport says Youssef. Converts who took a new first name, and Saudis who added or dropped a tribal name through Civil Affairs, do hold a decision. The translation separates these cases in a note, since a US clerk who sees two names and no order assumes something was hidden.

Who is asking for your Arabic change of name translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

USCIS translation requirements

US passports and the Department of State

The Department of State wants the translation notarized. Add notarization at checkout and we handle the rest.

Notarized translations

Banks, DMVs and Social Security

Offices updating your record to the new name accept a certified translation of the order, read next to the original. Some DMVs want it notarized as well, so check with your office first.

Certified translations

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Arabic change of name.

01

Send the court order or the registry act

A name change is proved by the judge's order, the deed poll or the registry entry that recorded it. Upload the document that made the change, not only an ID in the new name.

02

Show both names in the scan

The page that lists the old name and the new one is the page every recipient wants. Include the seal, the registration number and the back of the page.

03

Give us the English spelling of both names

Tell us how each name appears on your passport or other documents. The translation keeps the names as the order writes them and notes the spelling you use.

I changed my name in a US court. Will my Egyptian or Jordanian passport show it?
Only after the home country changes its own record. An Egyptian consulate will not issue a passport in a new name on the strength of a US order alone; the change is made in Egypt through the committee, often by a relative holding a power of attorney, with the US order apostilled and translated into Arabic. Jordan wants its own court ruling. We translate the order into Arabic for that filing, and we will tell you to ask whether the consulate insists on a translation from an office it names.
My passport spells my name differently from my birth certificate translation. Which spelling do you use?
The passport's, on every document in the order, with a note that the Arabic name is identical. The Latin spelling of an Arabic name is set when the first passport is issued and can differ between siblings. If the spelling itself is wrong, the passport office in Egypt or Jordan can correct it on application, and that correction is a spelling fix, not a name change; a translator's note saying so is usually all a US office needs.
My new Egyptian ID already shows the new name. Does USCIS still need the decision translated?
Yes, whenever a document in your file carries the old name: a university degree, a police clearance from years ago, a child's birth certificate naming you as parent. Without the committee decision, the officer sees two people. We translate the decision and the old and new birth certificate side by side where you have them, under one signed certification, so the chain from the earlier name to the ID is in the file in one place.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
