Portuguese name change translation for USCIS, the Social Security office, a DMV or a US passport, from the record Brazil uses to prove a new name: the averbação on the birth or marriage entry and the certidão that shows it. We also translate a US court order for a name change into Portuguese for a Brazilian consulate or cartório.
Written for Portuguese (Brazil) change of name records
Brazil does not issue a name change certificate
There is no standalone name change document in Brazil. The change is written into the margin of the birth entry, and a fresh certidão with that averbação is what a US office needs translated.
Since 2022, at the cartório without a judge
Law 14.382 of 2022 rewrote article 56 of the Lei de Registros Públicos. An adult may now change the prenome once, directly at the Registro Civil das Pessoas Naturais, with no reason given and no judge, and certain surname changes, such as adding a stepparent's surname or a spouse's, are also done at the counter. The cartório records an averbação and issues a new certidão de nascimento; the old one is not reissued. Before 2022 the same change took an ação de retificação de registro and a sentença, which older files still contain. We translate whichever document you hold, with the averbação's date, number and legal basis.
Gender identity changes under CNJ Provimento 73
A trans person in Brazil changes name and gender marker at the cartório under Provimento 73 of 2018 of the Conselho Nacional de Justiça, with no surgery, medical report or court order. The new certidão de nascimento shows the new name and gender and does not mention the change; only the inteiro teor of the record reveals it. For a US passport, USCIS or a DMV we translate the certidão you were issued, and if the recipient wants the link between the two names we translate the inteiro teor with its averbação, in the version you choose to disclose.
A US name change going to Brazil
A Brazilian citizen who changed name by a US court order, a marriage or a naturalization certificate has to have the change averbada in the Brazilian register before a consulate issues a passport in the new name. The consulate or the 1º Ofício de Registro Civil wants the US document apostilled and translated into Portuguese. Inside Brazil the cartório will ask for a tradução juramentada, which we do not provide; our Portuguese translation covers the consular file and the lawyer preparing the averbação, so ask the office first which it requires.
Who is asking for your Portuguese (Brazil) change of name translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
Offices updating your record to the new name accept a certified translation of the order, read next to the original. Some DMVs want it notarized as well, so check with your office first.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Portuguese (Brazil) change of name.
01
Send the court order or the registry act
A name change is proved by the judge's order, the deed poll or the registry entry that recorded it. Upload the document that made the change, not only an ID in the new name.
02
Show both names in the scan
The page that lists the old name and the new one is the page every recipient wants. Include the seal, the registration number and the back of the page.
03
Give us the English spelling of both names
Tell us how each name appears on your passport or other documents. The translation keeps the names as the order writes them and notes the spelling you use.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Portuguese (Brazil) change of name translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the change of name is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
I added my spouse's surname years after the wedding. Which certificate shows it?
Since 2022 a married person can add or drop the other spouse's surname during the marriage at the cartório, with no court case. The change is written as an averbação on the marriage entry, so order a new certidão de casamento showing it. We translate the averbação with its date, and the English gives the name before and after.
I corrected a spelling error on my birth certificate. Is that a name change?
In Brazil it is a retificação de registro, done at the cartório under article 110 of the Lei de Registros Públicos for an evident error or by court order for anything else, and it appears as an averbação just as a name change does. US offices read it the same way: a document showing both spellings. We translate the averbação and give the English rendering of both forms, so your passport, diploma and Brazilian certificate can be matched.
Does my CPF change after a name change in Brazil?
No. The CPF number stays the same, and the cartório reports the new prenome to the Receita Federal, the identity office, the Polícia Federal and the electoral court. Your old RG and passport still show the old name until you replace them. In a US file, the matching CPF on old and new documents helps show they belong to one person, so we keep it exactly as printed.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
