What an evaluator reads on an Arabic كشف درجات

An Arab university transcript may be a year-by-year list of marks out of 100 or a semester list with credit hours and a GPA, and the translation has to show which, because an evaluator converts them differently.

Egypt: marks, تقدير and the year system

An Egyptian بيان درجات from a public university lists each subject with its mark, its maximum and a تقدير: ممتاز, جيد جداً, جيد, مقبول, and for a fail ضعيف or ضعيف جداً, with a cumulative تقدير عام for the degree. Most faculties still run on the year system, where a student passes a whole year at once, while newer programs use credit hours (ساعات معتمدة). The translation keeps the mark, the maximum and the descriptor, and never invents a GPA the transcript does not carry.

Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the Gulf

Saudi and many Gulf transcripts use a GPA out of 5 with letter grades A+ to F, and the descriptors ممتاز مرتفع, ممتاز, جيد جداً مرتفع, جيد جداً. Jordanian universities use a GPA out of 4 or a percentage with the same descriptors, and the Jordanian توجيهي certificate reports a single average. We state the scale the transcript names so an evaluator does not read a 4.2 on a 5-point scale as impossible.

Syria, Iraq and secondary school certificates

Syrian and Iraqi transcripts list marks out of 100 with a yearly average, and the Iraqi وثيقة includes the student's standing and whether a subject was passed in the first or second sitting (الدور الأول والثاني). A Syrian or Egyptian secondary certificate gives a total out of a fixed maximum and a branch, علمي or أدبي, that decides which faculties the student could enter. Each of those lines goes over with its own label.

Who is asking for your Arabic academic transcript translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

Credential evaluators

WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation of each page, sent alongside the official transcript.

Certified translations

ECFMG and medical boards

Medical graduates send transcripts through ECFMG, which asks for an English translation of every document that is not in English.

ECFMG translations

Schools and universities

Admissions offices and school districts accept a certified translation they can read next to the original. A PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Arabic academic transcript.

01

Send the official copy

An evaluator wants the sealed transcript from the registrar, not a self-printed grade list. Order the translation from the same copy the school issues.

02

Include the grading legend

The scale, the pass mark and the credit system are usually printed at the foot or on the back. Send that part too so it is translated with the grades.

03

Expect more than one page per sheet

A transcript sheet holds far more than 250 words. The quote counts words, not sheets, so a two-sheet transcript may price as four or five pages.

Request a Quote

Does WES accept your translation of an Arabic transcript?
WES, ECE and the other evaluators accept a certified word-for-word translation as long as it is complete and the original is also sent, and most of them want the transcript itself to come from the institution in a sealed envelope or through its own verification route. Our translation goes with your copy; check the evaluator's page for your country, since the sending rules differ for Egypt, Iraq and Syria.
Do you convert the marks into a US GPA?
No. A certified translation reproduces the transcript; the conversion is the evaluator's or the university's job, and they want to see the original scale. We translate the marks, the maximum, the descriptors and any ranking as printed, and add a note describing the grading scale only where the transcript itself prints one.
The transcript is stamped by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Foreign Ministry. Do you translate the stamps?
Yes, every one. Egyptian transcripts often carry the university seal, the Supreme Council of Universities stamp and a Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation; Iraqi ones a تصديق from the ministry. Each stamp is translated with its office, date and reference number, because the evaluator uses them to confirm the document came through official channels.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
