Russian Name Change Translation

Russian name change translation covers the свидетельство о перемене имени a ЗАГС issues when a surname, given name or patronymic is changed, the marriage and divorce records that change a surname without any separate certificate, and the US court order or naturalization name change that a Russian consulate, bank or pension fund wants in Russian.

Русский Change of name English Certified translation CERTIFIED TRANSLATION

Written for Russian change of name records

Three ways a Russian name changes, and only one leaves a certificate

US agencies want a document for every name a person has held. In Russian records the link is often a line on another certificate, or a stamp, and the translation has to point to it.

Перемена имени at the ЗАГС

A person aged fourteen or over applies to the ЗАГС, and the office registers an акт о перемене имени and issues a свидетельство о перемене имени showing the old and new surname, given name and patronymic, the date and the registering office. The birth record is then amended and a new birth certificate issued with the new name and the original registration date. The translation gives both names in full, since a Russian name change can touch the patronymic alone, which no US form has a field for.

Marriage, divorce and the passport pages

A surname taken at marriage is recorded only in the marriage record and on the свидетельство о заключении брака, in the line фамилия после заключения брака, and a surname restored at divorce in the свидетельство о расторжении брака. Nothing separate is issued. The internal passport shows the change through a replacement passport, while the foreign passport shows it through a new booklet with a different transliteration. For a US file we translate the certificate that records the change and the passport page that proves it was applied.

Transliteration and the Central Asian suffix

In Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan many people drop the Russian -ов, -ова or -ев ending their surname took in the Soviet period, or take a Kazakh form such as Айдарұлы for a son or Айдарқызы for a daughter. That is a registered change through the ЗАГС and produces the same kind of certificate, so Айдаров on a Soviet birth certificate and Айдарұлы on a new passport are one person with a paper trail. The patronymic can go the same way. A different Latin spelling of the same Cyrillic name is a transliteration variant, not a change, and we say on the translation which of the two you are looking at.

Who is asking for your Russian change of name translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

US passports and the Department of State

The Department of State wants the translation notarized. Add notarization at checkout and we handle the rest.

Notarized translations

Banks, DMVs and Social Security

Offices updating your record to the new name accept a certified translation of the order, read next to the original. Some DMVs want it notarized as well, so check with your office first.

Certified translations

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Russian change of name.

01

Send the court order or the registry act

A name change is proved by the judge's order, the deed poll or the registry entry that recorded it. Upload the document that made the change, not only an ID in the new name.

02

Show both names in the scan

The page that lists the old name and the new one is the page every recipient wants. Include the seal, the registration number and the back of the page.

03

Give us the English spelling of both names

Tell us how each name appears on your passport or other documents. The translation keeps the names as the order writes them and notes the spelling you use.

I changed my name in the US. Does Russia need a translation?
A Russian citizen's name change abroad is not recognized in Russia on its own. The consulate can register a перемена имени for a Russian citizen living abroad, and a new Russian passport is then issued in the new name; a US court order or naturalization certificate showing the change is translated into Russian for that application, usually with an apostille on the court order. Banks, the Social Fund and notaries handling an inheritance in Russia ask for the same translation.
USCIS asked me to explain why my birth certificate and passport show different names. What do I send?
The document that made the change, translated: a свидетельство о перемене имени, a marriage certificate with the new surname, or a divorce certificate restoring the old one. If the only difference is transliteration, send the passports side by side and we add a translator's note explaining that Iuliia and Yuliya are the same Cyrillic name under two standards. USCIS wants the chain of names documented, not an affidavit guessing at it.
My child's surname and patronymic changed after the father was recorded. Is there a name change certificate?
No separate one. When paternity is established after the birth, the ЗАГС issues a свидетельство об установлении отцовства and reissues the birth certificate with the father's surname and a new patronymic. The same happens after an adoption, where the new birth certificate alone carries the new name. For USCIS or a school we translate the paternity certificate and the new birth certificate together and note which fields changed, because without the paternity certificate the two birth certificates look like two different children.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
