Ukrainian adoption documents translation for an I-600, a US re-adoption, a stepparent adoption of a child born in Ukraine, or the yearly report a Ukrainian consulate expects from adoptive parents. Ukraine never joined the Hague Adoption Convention, so the American side runs on orphan petitions and the Ukrainian side on a court decision rather than an adoption certificate alone. We translate both ways.
A Ukrainian adoption is ordered by a district court under the Family Code, and three offices then produce paper from that one decision.
The court decision and the orphan status behind it
The рішення суду про усиновлення from a районний суд is the operative document. It cites the child's status, дитина-сирота or дитина, позбавлена батьківського піклування, granted earlier by a decision of the district state administration, and it says whether the child's name, date or place of birth is changed and whether the adopters are to be recorded as the parents. A US petition turns on those lines, so the translation keeps the court's own phrasing and the date the decision took legal effect, which is later than the hearing date.
What ДРАЦС issues afterwards
On the decision, the registry office makes a new актовий запис and issues a свідоцтво про усиновлення and a fresh свідоцтво про народження naming the adopters as parents. The old certificate is withdrawn. Consents pass through this stage too: a notarized згода на усиновлення from a birth parent, the record of a child left in a maternity hospital, and the written consent of a child old enough to give one. Each is translated as a separate document with its own certification, so an agency can file them one by one.
Since 2022: relatives, stepparents and guardians
Ukraine suspended adoption by foreigners on 13 March 2022 and, from June 2023, allows it only for relatives, stepparents and siblings of children already adopted, with the Національна соціальна сервісна служба as the central authority. Many children evacuated to the US are not adopted at all but under опіка or піклування, with a рішення про встановлення опіки and a guardian's посвідчення, and a translation must not call that an adoption. A US stepparent adoption of a child born in Ukraine needs the other parent's consent, which a Ukrainian notary writes in Ukrainian and we translate for the family court.
Who is asking for your Ukrainian adoption documents translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
A state court recognizing a foreign adoption, or a vital records office issuing a US birth certificate, accepts a certified translation of the decree, notarized where the clerk asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Ukrainian adoption documents.
01
Send the full adoption file in one order
The court decree, the consent of the birth parents, the home study and the child's new birth certificate are read together. One order keeps the names and dates consistent across all of them.
02
Include the stamps and the finality note
A foreign adoption decree is complete only with the court seal and the note that it is final. Scan the back of each page and any attached certificates.
03
Give us the child's name as it will be registered
Tell us the spelling the child's passport or visa application uses. The translation keeps the name as the record writes it and notes the English spelling.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Ukrainian adoption documents translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the adoption documents is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
We are adopting my niece from Ukraine. Which of our documents go into Ukrainian?
The dossier: the home study, the I-600A approval notice, medical and income letters, police clearances and your marriage certificate, each apostilled in the issuing state first and then translated into Ukrainian, because the court and the social service read Ukrainian only. Ask your agency whether the Ukrainian side also wants the translator's signature certified by a Ukrainian notary or the consulate. We provide our signed certification and are not a Ukrainian notary.
We adopted from Ukraine years ago. What does the consulate's yearly report need?
Adoptive parents undertake, in the adoption file, to register the child at the Ukrainian consulate and to report on the child's living conditions each year until the child is eighteen. The report is written in English by the family or a social worker and goes to the consulate in Ukrainian, so we translate it, along with any school letter or medical summary attached, and keep the child's Ukrainian name as the court decision spelled it beside the American one.
I was adopted from Ukraine and want my original records. Can you translate what the archive sends?
Yes. The archive or the ДРАЦС office sends the original birth record with the name given at birth, sometimes a витяг showing the annotation made at adoption, and the court file if it still exists. An adoption made before 1991 is recorded in Russian under Soviet law. We translate the original name, the first registration and the annotation in full, and mark any line the archive copy left illegible, because that is what a search for birth family is built on.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
