French marriage certificate translation to English for a spouse petition, a green card interview or a name change, from an acte de mariage issued by a French mairie, the Directeur de l'état civil du Québec, a Haitian officier de l'état civil or a centre d'état civil in Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire or Cameroon.
What a French acte de mariage says beyond the two names
The French marriage act was written to settle property and family questions, so it records things a US clerk never asks about.
Contrat de mariage and the régime matrimonial
Every French acte de mariage states whether the couple signed a contrat de mariage, and if they did, the date and the notaire who drew it up. No contract means the default régime, communauté réduite aux acquêts. A US family court or an estate lawyer reads that line to know who owns what, so we translate it in full and keep the French term beside the English, since separation of property and community of acquisitions are not the same arrangement.
Livret de famille is not the acte
After a French wedding the mairie hands over a livret de famille, a booklet with the marriage on the first pages and a page for each child. Families send us the livret because it is what they have at home. It is a useful document and we translate it, but USCIS asks for the civil record itself, which is a copy of the acte de mariage from the mairie where the wedding took place. Send the acte first, and the livret if a checklist mentions it.
Monogamie or polygamie in West Africa
A Senegalese acte de mariage records the option the husband chose under the Code de la famille: monogamie, limitation de polygamie or polygamie. Cameroon prints a similar choice; Côte d'Ivoire allows only monogamy and its acte says so. USCIS reads that line when it decides whether a marriage is recognized for a petition, so we translate the option exactly as printed. A mariage coutumier that was later registered comes with the registration act, which we translate as its own document.
Who is asking for your French marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a French marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a French marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
My wedding was in Québec. Which document do I send?
The copie d'acte de mariage from the Directeur de l'état civil, not the certificat. The certificat is a short summary; the copie d'acte reproduces the full entry with the witnesses, the officiant and any mentions added later. USCIS wants the complete record. Either is usually one page.
Does the translation include the publication des bans and the witnesses?
Yes. A French acte opens with the officier de l'état civil, cites the publication of the banns, then names the spouses with their birth dates, places, occupations, addresses and parents, and the témoins. We translate the whole page, with the spouses' consent and every signature, and the witnesses keep the occupations and addresses the act gives them.
I married in the US and need the certificate in French for the French consulate. Can you do that?
Yes. A French national who marries in the US asks the consulate to transcribe the marriage into the French registers, and the file holds the US marriage certificate with a French translation. The consulate may insist on a translator from its own list for that file, so ask before you order. A French mairie or a Québec office that wants a US certificate usually wants the apostille from the issuing state first.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
