French diploma translation to English for a credential evaluation, a graduate school, a state licensing board or an employer, from the diplôme du baccalauréat, the licence, the master, the diplôme d'ingénieur and the diplôme d'État, and from the Québec DES, DEC and baccalauréat, which is a different thing altogether.
One word, baccalauréat, means two different degrees
The French system names its diplomas by level, and the same name can sit at a different level across the Atlantic or in an earlier decade.
Baccalauréat in France, baccalauréat in Québec
In France the baccalauréat is the school-leaving exam at eighteen, signed by the recteur d'académie, and the university degrees above it are the licence, the master and the doctorat. In Québec the baccalauréat is the university bachelor's degree; the school-leaving diploma is the DES and the two-year college diploma the DEC. A translation that renders both as "bachelor" sends an evaluator the wrong way, so we give the French name, a literal English rendering and the issuing body, and let the evaluator set the level.
Diplomas that the LMD reform retired
Older graduates hold a DEUG after two years, a maîtrise after four, a DEA or DESS after five, names that disappeared when France moved to licence, master, doctorat in the 2000s. The DUT became the BUT in 2021. These degrees are still valid and still evaluated, but only if the reader knows what they were. The translation keeps the original title and does not relabel a maîtrise as a master, which is a different diploma.
Diplôme d'ingénieur, diplôme d'État and the attestation
An engineering school accredited by the CTI awards a diplôme d'ingénieur that carries the grade de master, and the diploma says so. Doctors, nurses and pharmacists hold a diplôme d'État, the national qualification that opens the right to practise and the document ECFMG and state nursing boards verify. A French diploma is issued once; a graduate who lost it holds an attestation de réussite from the university instead, and we translate that as an attestation, not as a diploma.
Who is asking for your French diploma translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Credential evaluators
WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation sent with the original. The degree name stays in the original language beside the English.
Physicians trained abroad send their diploma and transcript through ECFMG, which asks for an English translation of every document that is not in English.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a French diploma.
01
Scan the back of the diploma
Registration numbers, the ministry stamp and the book and folio entries are often printed on the reverse. Send both sides.
02
Send the companion document
A professional license, a graduation act or a transcript often goes with the diploma. Upload the set so the numbers and dates are translated consistently.
03
Tell us who the translation is for
An evaluator, a licensing board and a university each read the degree name differently. Say in the order notes where it is going.
Details and pricing
What is included in a French diploma translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the diploma is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
My bac diploma has not arrived yet. What can I send?
The relevé de notes from the académie and the attestation de réussite, which the lycée or the rectorat issues within weeks of the results, long before the printed diploma. US universities accept the attestation with the relevé for admission and ask for the diploma later. We translate each as its own document so the file shows the degree was earned on the date the results were published.
Does the translation give the US equivalent of a licence or a master?
No. A licence is translated as a licence with a literal note, three-year degree, and a master stays a master. Deciding that a licence equals a US bachelor's is the evaluator's job, and evaluators such as WES and ECE ask for a literal translation that leaves the level to them. We also keep the mention, the domaine and the parcours printed on the diploma, since those tell the reader what was studied.
Do you translate a US diploma into French for France or Québec?
Yes. ENIC-NARIC France, which issues the attestation de comparabilité, and the Québec ministry that issues the évaluation comparative both read English documents, so check whether a translation is needed at all. A French employer, an ordre professionnel in Québec or a university registrar often does want one, and we translate the diploma and the transcript into French and can notarize them.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
