French birth certificate translation to English for USCIS, including the mentions marginales, from an acte de naissance issued in France, Québec, Haiti, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon or the DRC.
A French birth record is written as prose, and the two versions of it prove different things.
The copie intégrale, line by line
The full copy records the hour of birth, the parents with their own birth dates, places and occupations, the person who declared the birth and the registrar who took it down. The margin then lists marriages, divorces, name changes and the death. An extrait has the same opening facts and none of the margin. Both are usually one page; what differs is what each proves.
Actes from francophone Africa
Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Guinea and the DRC inherited the French layout but print it on their own forms, often handwritten, sometimes with a court ruling stapled behind. A Congolese attestation de naissance from a hospital is not the civil act. The translation names each document by its own title so a reader can tell the register copy from the supporting papers.
Mentions marginales
Mentions are written in a clipped shorthand: "Marié à Lyon le 4 mai 2010 avec Dupont, Marie", or a one-line reconnaissance with its date and place. We expand each abbreviation in English, keep the date and place, and list the mentions in the order they appear, since a later one can change a name or a parent on the original entry.
Who is asking for your French birth certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a French birth certificate.
01
Scan the whole page
Include the back, the margins and any marginal notes. A later correction or a recognition of paternity is often written in the margin, and the recipient needs to see it translated.
02
Give us the English spelling of each name
If your passport or green card spells a name without an accent, tell us at checkout. The translation keeps the names as the certificate writes them and notes the spelling you use.
03
Order the format the recipient asked for
If they want the long form, send the long form. We translate what you upload and cannot add parents' details that a short-form extract leaves out.
Details and pricing
What is included in a French birth certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the birth certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Which version should I send, the copie intégrale or the extrait?
Send whichever the recipient asked for. If they did not say, the copie intégrale is the safer one because it carries the margin notes that record a marriage or a name change. Either is usually one page, so the price is the same.
Is a Haitian birth certificate translated as French?
Yes. Haitian actes and the extrait des archives are written in French and belong on this page. Creole appears in affidavits and letters, which we translate under Haitian Creole. One order can hold both; upload everything you have.
Do you translate a US birth certificate into French?
Yes. People need it for a French or Québec residency application, a marriage in France or a child's nationality registration. Some French offices accept only a traducteur assermenté from their own list, so check with the receiving office before ordering, and ask whether an apostille on the original is needed first.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
