French transcript translation to English for a credential evaluator, a university admissions office, a school district or a licensing board, from the relevé de notes of a French université, the bulletin scolaire of a lycée, the Québec relevé from the Ministère de l'Éducation, and the French-language transcripts of Belgium, Switzerland, Haiti, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Morocco and Lebanon.
Why a 12 out of 20 is a good grade, and what we do about it
French grading runs on a scale of 20 and a university rarely gives above 16, so a transcript read as percentages looks much weaker than it is.
The scale of 20 stays, with its legend
A French relevé lists each unité d'enseignement with a note sur 20, 10 being a pass, and closes with the session result: ADM for admis, AJ for ajourné, DEF for défaillant, with ABI or ABJ for an absence. Belgium uses the same scale with the mentions satisfaction, distinction, grande distinction and la plus grande distinction; Switzerland grades from 1 to 6 with 4 as the pass; Québec reports percentages and a cote R. We keep every number as printed, translate the legend where the document prints one, and leave the conversion to the evaluator.
Baccalauréat relevé with coefficients
The relevé de notes du baccalauréat from the académie lists each épreuve with its note, its coefficient and the mention: assez bien from 12, bien from 14, très bien from 16. Senegal's Office du Baccalauréat, the OBC in Cameroon and Haiti's MENFP print the same structure. The coefficient column is the weight of the subject, not a second grade, and the translation labels it so an admissions reader does not add it to the score.
ECTS, compensation and the session 2
Since the LMD reform a licence relevé shows ECTS credits per unit and a semester average, and a failed unit can be compensée by a stronger one, so a student can pass the year with a 9 in one subject. A grade earned in session 2, the rattrapage sitting, appears on its own line. These are real features of the record, and the translation keeps them visible, since an evaluator must see a compensated unit as the French university does.
Who is asking for your French academic transcript translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Credential evaluators
WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation of each page, sent alongside the official transcript.
Admissions offices and school districts accept a certified translation they can read next to the original. A PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a French academic transcript.
01
Send the official copy
An evaluator wants the sealed transcript from the registrar, not a self-printed grade list. Order the translation from the same copy the school issues.
02
Include the grading legend
The scale, the pass mark and the credit system are usually printed at the foot or on the back. Send that part too so it is translated with the grades.
03
Expect more than one page per sheet
A transcript sheet holds far more than 250 words. The quote counts words, not sheets, so a two-sheet transcript may price as four or five pages.
Details and pricing
What is included in a French academic transcript translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the academic transcript is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
I studied in a classe préparatoire. Is there a transcript?
Not a relevé in the university sense. A CPGE issues an attestation descriptive du parcours listing the subjects, the hours and the ECTS credits the conseil de classe validated, and most students since 2013 also hold the partner université's relevé from their double enrollment. Send both if you have them; the evaluator uses them together to place the two years.
Which document counts as the official transcript for WES or ECE?
The relevé de notes issued and stamped by the scolarité office of the université, one per year or per semester, not the printout from the student portal. Evaluators may also ask the university to send it directly. Order the translation from the same stamped copy so the pages match. A relevé with thirty lines of courses runs past 250 words and prices as two pages or more.
Can you translate a transcript from Morocco, Lebanon or Algeria as French?
Yes, when it is written in French. Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian and Lebanese universities issue many relevés in French, often with an Arabic header or stamp. We translate the French body and the Arabic on the same document, so you do not need two orders. Tell us at checkout if a page is bilingual so the quote counts it correctly.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
