Hindi driver's license translation for a DMV, a car insurer, a rental counter or an employer. We translate the ड्राइविंग लाइसेंस issued by a Regional Transport Office in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi or Haryana, from the old paper booklet to the current smart card, with each vehicle class spelled out in English.
Indian licenses have changed format three times in a generation, and the older the license, the more of it is in Hindi.
The old RTO booklet
Licenses issued through the 1990s and 2000s came as a small booklet from the क्षेत्रीय परिवहन कार्यालय, with the holder's name, father's name and address handwritten in Hindi, a pasted photograph, and renewal stamps added page by page. In Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh the printed headings were often Hindi only. Each page with writing or a stamp is a page to translate, and the renewal stamps matter, since an insurer reads them as the driving history.
Classes of vehicle
An Indian license lists the classes the holder may drive in the RTO's own codes: LMV, हल्का मोटर वाहन, for cars; MCWG, मोटर साइकिल विद गियर, and MCWOG for motorcycles; HMV or HGMV and HPMV for heavy goods and passenger vehicles; TRANS for a transport endorsement with its own expiry. A DMV clerk has no key to these. The translation writes out each class in English with the original code in brackets, and keeps the separate validity dates for the transport and non-transport classes.
Fields the US card does not have
The card prints the blood group, the father's or husband's name as S/o or W/o, the date of first issue, which is what an insurer wants as proof of years of driving, and sometimes a hazardous goods or badge endorsement. The license number encodes the state and the RTO, UP32 for Lucknow for instance, followed by the year. We translate every label, keep the number exactly as printed, and name the RTO so the DMV can see which office issued it.
Who is asking for your Hindi driver's license translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
State DMVs
Most DMV offices accept a certified translation of a foreign license. A few want it notarized as well, so check with your office before you order.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Hindi driver's license.
01
Scan both sides
The categories, restrictions and the issue and expiry dates are usually on the back. Upload the front and the back in one order so the translation covers the whole card.
02
Match the name to your passport
Tell us the English spelling you use. The translation shows the name as the license prints it and notes your spelling so the office can match both.
03
Ask the office which format they accept
Some DMVs want a certified translation, others want it notarized as well. Check before you order and add notarization at checkout if they ask for it.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Hindi driver's license translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the driver's license is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
My new smart card is already in English. Do I still need a translation?
Often not. Smart cards printed through the Sarathi system carry English labels, and many DMVs accept them as they are. The Hindi on a smart card is usually the state transport department's name, the RTO name or a seal. Send a photo; if the card is fully readable in English we say so, and if a DMV insists on a certified translation anyway, we translate the Hindi on it and certify the card as a whole.
Can I drive in the US on my Indian license with your translation?
Each state sets its own rule on how long a visitor or a new resident can drive on a foreign license, and most want an English translation or an International Driving Permit with it. An International Driving Permit from your RTO is printed in several languages, and some states take it in place of a translation. Ask your DMV what it wants before you order; if it asks for a notarized translation, that is an add-on at checkout.
Do you translate a learner's license or a driving school certificate?
Yes. A learner's license, शिक्षार्थी लाइसेंस, is valid for six months and shows which classes you were learning; a motor training school certificate, Form 5, proves the course. Neither replaces a full license for a DMV, but an insurer or an employer hiring drivers sometimes asks for them with the license, and each is translated as its own page.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
