Written for Hindi affidavit records

The anatomy of a Hindi shapath patra

The body of the affidavit is the short part. The stamp paper, the vendor's endorsement and the notary's attestation take as long to translate and are what a US reader checks first.

Stamp paper and e-stamp

In Uttar Pradesh an affidavit is sworn on ten-rupee non-judicial stamp paper, which today is an e-stamp certificate printed through Stock Holding Corporation with a certificate number, the purchaser's name, the words Article 4 Affidavit and the duty paid. Older affidavits sit on pre-printed stamp paper with the vendor's handwritten register entry on the back: a serial number, the date of sale, the buyer's name and the purpose. The translation reproduces each of these fields, because they let a US reader check that the affidavit was sworn when it says it was.

Deponent, verification and attestation

The affidavit opens with the deponent's name, पुत्र or पत्नी with the father's or husband's name, age and residence, then शपथपूर्वक बयान करता हूँ कि and numbered paragraphs, and closes with the सत्यापन, a verification that the contents are true to the deponent's knowledge, with place and date. Under it sits the notary's attested stamp with the registration number and the serial in the notarial register, or the oath commissioner's stamp, and a photograph of the deponent stamped across its corner. A US acknowledgment has no verification clause, so we translate it as its own paragraph.

Affidavits US readers ask for

A one-and-same-person affidavit when the name differs between the marksheet, the passport and the Aadhaar, Rajesh Kumar on one and Rajesh Kumar Yadav on another. A single-status affidavit, the अविवाहित होने का शपथ पत्र, for a marriage abroad. A relationship affidavit when the birth record does not name both parents. A birth affidavit from a grandmother or an uncle who was there, which USCIS reads for how the affiant knows the facts and the affiant's own birth date. We translate the whole statement, including the spellings the deponent chose.

Who is asking for your Hindi affidavit translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

Affidavits standing in for a missing birth or marriage record are accepted with a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

Courts

A court admits a translated affidavit with the translator's signed certification, and many ask for it notarized. Add notarization at checkout if the clerk asks for it.

Notarized translations

Inheritance and estate matters abroad

Heirs settling an estate in another country send sworn statements with an apostille on the original and a translation into that country's language.

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Hindi affidavit.

01

Send the signed and notarized version

An affidavit is the sworn statement plus the notary block, stamp and seal. Upload the executed copy, with every exhibit it refers to, not the draft.

02

Give us the names as the passport spells them

The affiant, the notary and anyone named in the statement keep their names as written, with your English spelling noted, so the recipient can match the affidavit to the rest of the file.

03

Tell us where it is going

A court, USCIS and a foreign registry each want the certification handled differently. Say which in the order notes and we match the format.

The affidavit is typed in Hindi but my name appears in English in it. Which spelling do you use?
The English name typed in the original is kept exactly as typed. Where the same name appears in Devanagari, it is transliterated to match your passport, and a translator's note records that both refer to the same person. If the Hindi could be read two ways, अनिल as Anil or Aneel, tell us at checkout which one your other documents use.
Can you translate a US affidavit into Hindi for use in India?
Yes. Families send affidavits for a property partition, a succession certificate, a school admission or a court case in a Hindi-speaking district. The US affidavit is notarized here and apostilled by the Secretary of State of the signing state, and we translate it into Hindi and can notarize the translation. We are not Indian notaries, and some courts there want the translation attested locally as well, so ask the court or the advocate first.
Does the notary's stamp need to be translated?
Yes. Every stamp is translated: the notary's name, Regd. No., Government of India, the date and the serial number, and the full text of the e-stamp certificate. Any impression too faint to read is marked illegible with its position noted. A USCIS officer reading an affidavit wants proof that it was sworn, and the stamps are that proof.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
