Hindi marriage certificate translation to English for a spouse petition, a CR-1 or K-3 interview, a name change or a joint sponsor file. We translate the विवाह प्रमाण पत्र issued by a Registrar of Marriages or a Marriage Officer, and the papers people hold when the wedding was never registered.
Which Act the certificate cites, and why an officer reads that line
An Indian marriage certificate names the law it was registered under, and that citation tells a US officer what kind of record is in front of them.
Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act
A marriage between two Hindus, Sikhs, Jains or Buddhists is registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, at the Registrar of Marriages for the place of the wedding or the couple's home: the sub-registrar or SDM office in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, a Registrar reporting to the District Marriage Registration Officer in Rajasthan. A marriage between people of different religions, or a civil marriage, goes to the Marriage Officer under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, after a thirty-day notice. The certificate cites the Act and the section, and we translate that citation in full, since it separates a religious wedding registered afterwards from a civil marriage solemnized at the office.
Rites, witnesses and ages
A Hindu Marriage Act certificate states that the marriage was solemnized according to Hindu rites and ceremonies, and the translation keeps that legal phrase rather than shortening it to "married". It gives the date and place of the ceremony, each spouse's age or date of birth on that day, each father's name, and the witnesses with their signatures. On Uttar Pradesh and Bihar forms the headings are bilingual and the entries handwritten in Devanagari. Every witness and seal is translated, because an officer compares the wedding date with the registration date printed beside it.
When the marriage was never registered
Registration became compulsory in Rajasthan in 2009 and in Uttar Pradesh in 2017, and most couples married before then in a village or a temple hold no certificate. What they hold is the wedding invitation card, a certificate from an Arya Samaj mandir, a pandit's letter, a nikahnama from the qazi, or an affidavit of marriage sworn later on stamp paper. USCIS accepts a certificate issued years after the wedding when the marriage was registered late, and wants secondary evidence when it was not. We translate the late certificate with its registration date intact, and each other paper as its own document.
Who is asking for your Hindi marriage certificate translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
USCIS
USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.
IRCC accepts a certified translation with the translator's affidavit. Order the certified translation and add notarization if your application guide asks for it.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Hindi marriage certificate.
01
Send every page, including the register entry
Many certificates are an extract of a register entry. If you have both the extract and the register page, upload both so the witnesses, the property regime and the marginal notes are translated too.
02
Spell both names the way the passports do
The translation keeps each name as the certificate writes it. Tell us the spelling each spouse uses in English so the recipient can match the two documents.
03
Check whether the recipient wants a recent copy
USCIS and many consulates ask for a certificate issued recently. Get the fresh copy first and then order its translation, so the issue dates match.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Hindi marriage certificate translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the marriage certificate is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Our nikahnama is in Urdu, not Hindi. Can you translate it?
Yes. A nikahnama from a qazi in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar or Delhi is usually written in Urdu, with the mehr amount, the wali and the witnesses, though some are in Hindi or bilingual. Order it as an Urdu document if the handwriting is Urdu script and as Hindi if it is Devanagari. Send a photo first if you are not sure and we tell you which it is.
Is an Arya Samaj marriage certificate enough for USCIS?
An Arya Samaj mandir issues its own certificate on the day of the ceremony, naming the couple, the priest and the witnesses. It records that a wedding took place, but it is not registration; the couple still registers under the Hindu Marriage Act, and that government certificate is the record USCIS expects. Send both. We translate the mandir certificate so the ceremony date is readable, and the registrar's certificate as the legal proof.
The registrar gave me a Hindi certificate with a typed English copy stapled to it. Which do I upload?
Both pages. Some registrars type a separate English version and attach it to the Hindi original, and the English copy is often the weaker one: the stamps, the signatures and the handwritten corrections sit on the Hindi page. We translate the Hindi page in full and put the stapled English page in the same certified set, so a reader can compare the two.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
