Written for Spanish birth certificate records

What we translate on a Spanish birth certificate

Most of the Spanish birth certificates we see are Mexican, and the version you hold decides how much there is to translate.

Long-form acta or printed copia certificada

The older acta de nacimiento is a full page of handwriting or typescript from the Registro Civil, naming the parents, the grandparents and the witnesses. Since 2015 Mexico has printed the copia certificada in one standard format with a folio and the CURP. Both are usually one page at $25, but the long form carries more text and needs more care.

Which surname goes where

A Mexican certificate lists the paternal surname and then the maternal one. US forms have a single family name field, and both belong in it, paternal first; the translation keeps them in that order. If your passport or green card shows only one, say so at checkout and the translator adds a note so the records still read as one person.

Anotaciones marginales

The margin of an acta records what happened after the birth: a marriage, a divorce, a legitimation, a name correction, an adoption. These notes are handwritten, stamped and easy to overlook. Every one is translated and labelled as a marginal note, so the English copy proves the same facts as the original.

Who is asking for your Spanish birth certificate translation?

The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.

USCIS

USCIS asks for a complete English translation and a signed certification from the translator. No notarization is needed.

US passports and the Department of State

The Department of State wants the translation notarized. Add notarization at checkout and we handle the rest.

Consulates abroad

Consulates receive the translation of a US document, often with an apostille on the original. Tell us the consulate in your order notes.

Apostille service

Before you upload

Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Spanish birth certificate.

01

Scan the whole page

Include the back, the margins and any marginal notes. A later correction or a recognition of paternity is often written in the margin, and the recipient needs to see it translated.

02

Give us the English spelling of each name

If your passport or green card spells a name without an accent, tell us at checkout. The translation keeps the names as the certificate writes them and notes the spelling you use.

03

Order the format the recipient asked for

If they want the long form, send the long form. We translate what you upload and cannot add parents' details that a short-form extract leaves out.

  • The document title and the language pair.
  • The translator is competent in both languages.
  • A signature and the ImmiTranslate certification stamp.
  • Our American Translators Association corporate membership.

Spanish Birth Certificate FAQ

Most questions about pricing and turnaround can be answered faster by requesting a quote.

Request a Quote

Do I need to translate the back of a Mexican birth certificate?
Yes, if anything is printed or written there. Older actas carry stamps, a registrar's signature or a marginal note on the reverse, and some printed copies have text on the back as well. Send both sides and we translate whatever carries information.
Is a Puerto Rico birth certificate already a US record?
Yes. Puerto Rico is a US territory and its Registro Demográfico certificate is a US birth record. If yours is in Spanish only, a passport office or any other recipient that works in English will still want a translation, and we certify it like any other.
Do you translate a US birth certificate into Spanish for Mexico?
Yes. For a dual nationality registration or a school in Mexico, we translate the certificate into Spanish and can notarize the translation. The apostille on the original comes from the issuing state. Ask the consulate first whether it insists on a perito traductor, since some Mexican offices accept only those.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
