Ukrainian deposition translation for a witness who testified through an interpreter, a transcript a Ukrainian court must read, or the Ukrainian paper that stands in for a deposition: the протокол допиту свідка from a criminal case, or the заява свідка a civil witness signs before a notary. We translate US transcripts into Ukrainian and Ukrainian witness records into certified English.
There is no deposition in Ukrainian procedure, and that changes the translation
Ukraine takes witness evidence in court or at an investigator's desk, so what arrives from Ukraine is a protocol, a written statement or a court recording rather than a stenographic question and answer.
Протокол допиту and the written заява свідка
In a criminal case an investigator questions the witness and writes a протокол допиту under Article 224 of the Criminal Procedure Code, in the first person, in prose, signed on every page, with the warning about liability for false testimony above the signature. In a civil or commercial case since the 2017 procedure reform a witness may file a заява свідка, a written statement whose signature a notary certifies, under Article 93 of the Civil Procedure Code. Neither is a transcript. The translation says which kind of record it is, keeps the article cited and renders the liability warning, since that warning is what makes the statement count.
A US transcript going to a Ukrainian court
A Ukrainian court reads evidence in Ukrainian, and a deposition taken in Texas or New Jersey arrives as a long question and answer with objections, off the record breaks and a reporter's certificate. We translate the full transcript, including the objections and the certificate page, keep the page and line numbers so counsel can cite them, and render the oath. Ukrainian courts usually want the translator's signature certified by a Ukrainian notary and an apostille on the reporter's certification. We are not a Ukrainian notary and say so, so check the form with your lawyer in Ukraine.
Interpreted depositions and Hague requests
A deponent from Ukraine in a US case usually testifies through an interpreter, and someone from Odesa or Kharkiv may ask for Russian. The English transcript is the record, and what needs translating are the exhibits: a договір, ПриватБанк statements, a Viber thread. Testimony taken in Ukraine for a US court goes through the 1970 Hague Evidence Convention via the Ministry of Justice, and the Ukrainian court's протокол or the recording of the hearing comes back for translation into English. Place names follow the 2010 official romanization, Kyiv not Kiev, except inside a quoted document.
Who is asking for your Ukrainian deposition translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Courts
A deposition filed in a US court needs a complete English translation with a signed certification from the translator. Some judges want it notarized as well, so check the local rules.
A Rule 2004 examination or a deposition in a bankruptcy case is filed with a certified translation of the testimony and of any foreign-language exhibits.
Testimony taken in the US for a case in another country usually goes out with an apostille on the reporter's certificate and a translation into that country's language.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Ukrainian deposition.
01
Send the certified transcript, not the rough draft
Court reporters issue a rough draft first and the certified transcript later. Order the translation from the certified copy, with the reporter's certificate page.
02
Include the exhibits the witness was asked about
A deponent is often questioned on a letter or a contract marked as an exhibit. If those are in another language too, upload them in the same order so the terms are translated the same way.
03
Expect many pages and tell us the deadline
A transcript can run to a few hundred pages, and the quote counts words, not sheets. Upload the file to see the price before you pay, and put the filing date in the order notes.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Ukrainian deposition translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the deposition is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Can you translate the audio recording of a Ukrainian court hearing?
We translate written text. A Ukrainian court keeps a technical recording of each hearing that a party can request, and the written журнал судового засідання lists only the stages of the hearing, not what the witness said, so the recording is where the testimony lives. Have it transcribed in Ukrainian first, then send the transcript, or ask us before ordering so we can tell you what we can do with the file you have.
Do you need the whole transcript, or only the pages my lawyer marked?
Either. For a US court, counsel often designates page ranges, and the certification then names the pages translated and states that nothing inside them was left out. For a Ukrainian court, send the whole transcript, because a judge there expects a complete document and the other side will ask for the pages that are missing.
Will a US court accept your translation of a протокол допиту?
US courts take a translation with a signed certification stating that the translator is competent in Ukrainian and English and that the translation is complete and accurate, which every order includes. The other side may challenge a translation, so we keep the Ukrainian legal terms consistent and footnote any that have no English equivalent, such as the status of a потерпілий, rather than smoothing them over. Notarization is an add-on where a court asks for it.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
