Translate medical records from French to English for a physician, an insurer, an injury claim or ECFMG. We translate the compte rendu d'hospitalisation, the ordonnance, the carnet de santé and lab reports from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Québec, Haiti and francophone Africa, certified and signed.
French records are written for the médecin traitant, the family doctor who holds the file, and they assume the reader knows the shorthand.
Lettre de liaison and compte rendu
Since 2017 a French hospital hands the patient a lettre de liaison on the day of discharge, in place of the older compte rendu d'hospitalisation, and both are still in circulation. Either gives the motif d'hospitalisation, antécédents, histoire de la maladie, the examens and a conclusion with the traitement de sortie. A compte rendu opératoire covers the surgery itself. We translate each by its own title so the reader knows which document it is.
Chart shorthand and the 12/8 blood pressure
ATCD for antécédents, TTT for traitement, HTA for hypertension, RAS for nothing to report, PEC for prise en charge, CAT for conduite à tenir, NFS for the blood count a US doctor calls a CBC. French charts also write blood pressure as 12/8, in centimetres of mercury, where a US chart reads 120/80. Each abbreviation is spelled out, and the unit is written beside the reading so 12/8 is not taken for a typo.
Ordonnances and brand names
A French ordonnance lists drugs by brand: Doliprane or Efferalgan for paracétamol, which the US calls acetaminophen, Lévothyrox, Kardégic. Dosing reads 1 cp matin et soir pendant 7 jours, with cp for comprimé, gél for gélule, sach for sachet. The translation keeps the brand, gives the generic name beside it and writes the dosing in full, so a pharmacist or doctor can match it to a US equivalent.
Who is asking for your French medical records translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Doctors and hospitals
A new physician needs your diagnoses, medications and reports in English before the first visit. Each report is translated in full and certified, so it can go into your chart as it is.
Health, travel and disability insurers ask for the medical report and the itemized bill in English, translated completely and certified, before they pay a claim for care received abroad.
ECFMG accepts a word-for-word translation on a translation service's letterhead, signed by the translator with a certification statement. Summaries and extracts are refused. Our certified translations follow that format.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a French medical records.
01
Send the pages a doctor would read
The discharge letter, the current medication list and the reports it relies on cover most visits. A full hospital file can run to hundreds of pages, so start with those and add the rest if the recipient asks.
02
Letterhead, stamps and signatures count
The hospital header, the doctor's stamp and the registration number on a prescription identify who wrote the record. Scan each page whole, including forms and the back of any page with a stamp.
03
Tell us who will read it
A physician needs the clinical pages, an insurer the diagnosis and the itemized bill, ECFMG a word-for-word translation of the entire document. Say which in the order notes, with the patient's name as the passport spells it.
Details and pricing
What is included in a French medical records translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the medical records is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Yes. The carnet is the booklet every child in France gets at birth, with the vaccination pages, growth curves, hospital stays and the examens obligatoires. A US pediatrician or school usually needs the vaccination pages and any hospitalisation notes. Send each page with an entry, and the cover with the child's name, and we translate those pages.
What do I send for an injury or disability claim?
The certificat médical initial, which describes the injuries and sets the ITT, the number of days of incapacité totale de travail, and the avis d'arrêt de travail that covers the sick leave. The two are not the same thing: ITT is a measure courts use, the arrêt de travail is what the employer and the Assurance Maladie see. The translation keeps them distinct. Add the feuilles de soins and invoices if an insurer is reimbursing you.
Do you translate US medical records into French?
Yes. Patients send US records to a médecin traitant in France, to the Assurance Maladie or a mutuelle for care received abroad, to a Belgian mutualité or a Swiss caisse-maladie. We translate the US report, the itemized bill and the discharge summary into French, and can add notarization if the insurer asks for it.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
