Russian transcript translation to English for a credential evaluator such as WES or ECE, a US graduate school, a licensing board or an employer. A Russian university does not issue a transcript as such; the course record is the приложение к диплому, or an академическая справка for unfinished studies, and we translate every course, hour and grade on it.
Hours, зачёт and the five-point scale: what a Russian course record contains
The приложение к диплому is a table of every subject studied, the hours or credits spent on it, and a grade, followed by the coursework, internships and the thesis. Three features of it have no direct US equivalent.
Examined courses are graded отлично, хорошо or удовлетворительно, the 5, 4 and 3 of the five-point scale, and the приложение prints the word, not the number. Courses that ended in a зачёт, a pass/fail test, show зачтено. We translate the words as excellent, good, satisfactory and passed and do not convert them to letter grades or a GPA, because the evaluator applies its own table and a translated A or B would be treated as an alteration. The number of зачтено lines is high on a Russian record, and an evaluator expects that.
Hours and зачётные единицы
Soviet and 1990s приложения give each course in академические часы; records issued after the switch to bachelor's and master's degrees give зачётные единицы as well, where one credit is 36 hours. Both columns stay as printed. The record also lists курсовые работы with their topics, учебная and производственная практика with the hours, and the государственный экзамен and выпускная квалификационная работа with the thesis title and grade. A US registrar often asks only for the course table; an evaluator wants the whole document, both sides.
Академическая справка and справка об обучении
A student who left before graduating, or who transferred, holds an академическая справка, the same course table on a different form with the date of the отчисление order. Since 2013 the document is called справка об обучении или о периоде обучения, so a student who left in 2010 and one who left in 2016 hold papers with different titles that do the same job. For Soviet studies a выписка из зачётной ведомости sometimes stands in. We name each document for what it is in the certification so a US reader is not left looking for a transcript that was never issued.
Who is asking for your Russian academic transcript translation?
The translation is the same. What changes is whether the recipient wants anything added to it.
Credential evaluators
WES, ECE and similar services ask for a word-for-word certified translation of each page, sent alongside the official transcript.
Admissions offices and school districts accept a certified translation they can read next to the original. A PDF is usually enough; ask for a hard copy if they want one.
Three things that save a day of back and forth on a Russian academic transcript.
01
Send the official copy
An evaluator wants the sealed transcript from the registrar, not a self-printed grade list. Order the translation from the same copy the school issues.
02
Include the grading legend
The scale, the pass mark and the credit system are usually printed at the foot or on the back. Send that part too so it is translated with the grades.
03
Expect more than one page per sheet
A transcript sheet holds far more than 250 words. The quote counts words, not sheets, so a two-sheet transcript may price as four or five pages.
Details and pricing
What is included in a Russian academic transcript translation
One price per page covers the translation and its certification. A page is up to 250 words, and the quote tells you the page count before you pay.
Everything on the academic transcript is translated, including stamps, seals and handwritten notes. Tell us the English spelling you use for each name when you order.
Do you need the diploma as well as the приложение?
Yes, send both. The приложение is valid only with the diploma whose number it carries, and the course table does not repeat the degree, the qualification or the date of the state examination board's decision. WES, ECE and most universities ask for the pair, and the two are translated as separate pages so each can be matched to its original. If the приложение runs to both sides of a long sheet it may count as two or three pages at $25 each.
Can you translate my Russian grades into a US GPA?
No, and a certified translation should not. The translation shows the Russian grade words and the hours as printed; a credential evaluator or the admissions office converts them, and they use different tables. What we do add is a short translator's note explaining the five-point scale and the зачтено pass mark, so the reader knows a 3 is a pass and not a failing grade.
I need my US transcript translated into Russian. Who asks for that?
A Russian university taking a transfer student, an employer in Russia, or Главэкспертцентр, the office under Рособрнадзор that issues the свидетельство о признании for a foreign degree. They want the transcript and the diploma translated into Russian with the translation notarized, and the originals apostilled. We translate into Russian and can notarize; confirm with the university whether a translation certified in the US is accepted or whether a Russian notary must certify the translator.
How much does a certified translation cost?
Certified translation is $25 per page, with a page counted as up to 250 words. Notarization, a mailed physical copy and an apostille are optional and priced separately.
How long does a certified translation take?
Standard turnaround starts at 24 hours and depends on the length and language of your documents. If you have a deadline, include it in your quote request.
